There are almost 40 confirmed speakers for the Third Annual Tennessee Bike Summit, ranging from engineers, to advocates, to business owners, to policy makers. These speakers are from Nashville, Knoxville, Memphis, Chattanooga and towns across the state, as well as several from national organizations including the League of American Bicyclists, the Alliance for Biking and Walking, and the Adventure Cycling Association. You do not want to miss the opportunity to hear all of the speakers within the span of just 2 days. Plus, having a great turnout at the Bike Summit is the best way to show Tennessee that bike advocates and supporters mean business. The Nashville MPO staff just learned that Senate Bill 2243 and House Bill 2156 will likely go to a conference committee and all indications are that an amendment will be introduced that will require state legislative approval for any Bus Rapid Transit project using a dedicated lane on any state highway or state right-of-way, anywhere in Tennessee. With the General Assembly wanting to adjourn soon, this is likely to move pretty quickly. We need all of you to act now by communicating with your house and senate members to let them know that this is an interference with local decision making process. Phone calls and emails voicing your opposition are critical now. Please take a brief moment to contact your state representatives: "We urge you to vote against any legislation that will require the Tennessee General Assembly to approve Bus Rapid Transit projects using dedicated lanes on state highways. We urge you to allow the members of Tennessee's Metropolitan Planning Organizations, which represent local governments, transit agencies and the Tennessee Department of Transportation, to work together to determine the most appropriate transportation projects and alignments to fit the needs of the metropolitan areas of our state." http://www.capitol.tn.gov/legislators/ |
| KNOXVILLE AND CHATTANOOGA SQUARE OFF FOR NATIONAL BIKE CHALLENGE | Bike Walk Knoxville is looking forward to challenging Bike Walk Chattanooga in a Local Challenge of the National Bike Challenge this May 1-September 30, 2014. The Challenge is hosted by the League of American Bicyclists and sponsored by Kimberly Clark. Participants can enter all bike miles ridden in the challenge. There are national prizes as well as prizes from BWK and BWC. Please register and track your miles for the local and state challenge. Last year Tennessee was 48th overall. Let's team up and do better this year! |
| 5TH GRADERS ACROSS TENNESSEE CREATE BIKE ART | Over the last couple of months, 5th grade students from across Tennessee submitted posters for consideration in the annual 5th Grade Saris Poster Contest expressing their creative interpretation of the famous John F. Kennedy quote, "Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride." Board members from Bike Walk Tennessee serve as the jury with the unenviable task of choosing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place from the all the amazing submissions in TN. Congratulations to Emily Winsett of Collierville, TN on receiving first place from all submissions in TN! Emily's poster is now on display with 24 other state winners in a national contest. If chosen as the winner, Emily and her parents will join the TN delegation to next year's National Bike Summit in Washington, DC. | LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER FOR INAUGURAL BR23 RIDE |
The inaugural group ride of United States Bike Route 23 will be April 24-29. The entire ride goes from the Kentucky state line to the Alabama state line, and back to Nashville. A sag vehicle will be available to ferry luggage as long as you let us know by April 15. You are responsible for your own transportation to and from your start and finish and your lodging so you can begin and end to suit your own schedule. So far most riders have arranged carpool among themselves, another reason to jump in now. This will be a leisurely sight seeing, feature documenting, picture taking ride, so don't let weak legs from this cruel winter stop you. All details are on the blog. RIVER SPORTS HOSTS BIKE WALK KNOXVILLE FUNDRAISER  River Sports hosted a pint night fundraiser for BIke Walk Knoxville April 1. The event was sponsored by Osprey, and with great weather about 200 people came out and $1,200 was raised for Bike Walk Knoxville!
