Jimmy Ogle Memphis & Arkansas Bridge Walks
& Talks
2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 12
The Memphis & Arkansas Bridge (southernmost, I-55) is the only one of the four bridges in Memphis that a person can "legally" walk over, as it has sidewalks that were built into its features in 1951. Most people do not know, and the few that do know it are scared to go down there, or park there car in an unsecured public park gravel lot, or just do not know how to get there - or are just lazy! [Exit 12C from westbound I-55] Also, there is a day coming that the Harahan Greenline will be a reality, so we need to start acclimating folks to the south bluffs area of the riverfront, which is by far the most dramatic and scenic portion of all of the 250+ acres between the wolf River and the lower bridges.
Saturday, May 12
All Memphis & Arkansas Bridge Tours assemble at 2:00 p.m. at Crump Park. Security for parking will be on duty. Access to the sidewalk is not ADA compliant, so handicapped assistance will be offered to reach the sidewalk (as necessary), but the Memphis & Arkansas Bridge sidewalk is accessible across, and railings are at approved levels.

Well, I am going to make it easy for everybody. On these dates at 2:00 p.m., I will be in Crump Park, just south of I-55 on Metal Museum Drive ready to talk about the Mississippi River, the three bridges, the lower bluffs, railroads, Crump Park, National Ornamental Metal Museum, the Marine Hospital grounds, Chickasaw Heritage Park, Economy Boat Store, Valero Refinery, President's Island, French Fort neighborhood and any river traffic that may be cruising beneath us 80 feet below, as we walk about halfway across on the southern side sidewalk. |
