RESOLUTION NO. RS2014-1083

A Resolution proclaiming the month of May 2014 as Bike Month in Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County, and welcoming the Tennessee Bike Summit to Nashville.

WHEREAS, Nashville has become a city more friendly to bicyclists and pedestrians due to the efforts of Mayors Phil Bredesen, Bill Purcell, Karl Dean and past and present Metropolitan County Councils; and

WHEREAS, Nashville/Davidson County is designated a Bicycle Friendly City by the League of American Cyclists; and

WHEREAS, the Tennessee Bike Summit will be held in our great city on May 14-16, 2014, at the request of Mayor Karl Dean, bringing together cycling activists, government officials, and other cyclists from around the state; and

WHEREAS, Bike Walk Tennessee led by its Board of Directors of outstanding Tennesseans brought the Third Annual Bike Summit to Nashville; and

WHEREAS, Bike Walk Tennessee will be ably supported in organizing the Summit by the staff and Board of Directors of Walk Bike Nashville and the members of the Mayor’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee; and

WHEREAS, Friday, May 16, 2014, is Bike to Work Day to be celebrated at the Public Square by bicyclists riding from all parts of the city and county; and

WHEREAS the Tour de Nash, sponsored by Walk Bike Nashville, will bring hundreds of bicyclists to utilize our bicycle friendly greenways, trails and streets on Saturday, May 17.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming the month of May 2014 as Bike Month in Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County, and welcoming all participants to the Tennessee Bike Summit, Bike to Work Day and the Tour de Nash.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
