Hello CP Group Associate,

How is everyone?  Hopefully all is well n the midst of this Covid-19.   Pls let us know.  I've been thinking. Are we in the vulnerable group b/c we have CP?
I don't have a medical background,  but I think the majority of us are.  I have shallow breathing.  In average times, I hope I don't get a chest cold b/c it's  hard 4 me  2 hack that flem up.

I know PWD, especially us who are born w/ a disability, tell ourselves and others that We're healthly, We're tough.  However, this maybe the time to put this mantra on hold.

So let us know how u r and how you're affected by Covid-19. Anny funny stories out there.  Pls share those 2.

Peace,

Hi Everyone,
Thanks Sherrone for your email.  Every little connection makes me feel less alone.  Does everyone know about the movie Crip Camp?  Esme and I watched it together yesterday--that is we were virtually together, me in CA and Esme in VA.   The movie is on Netflix and it is a great history lesson!

Take care and be well friends!

Judith

Dear Scherrone,

I am so glad to hear from you. It turns out that in early March, I bumped into a CP Specialist doctor at a religious event. I asked him flat out if persons with CP are more susceptible to disease due to our immune systems. He didn't think so.

My immune system seems pretty normal. I haven't had a ton of colds or respiratory infections since childhood. In those days, my parents made me take a lot of medicine. Looking back, I don't think I needed all those pills.   I think we could be more at risk due to lack of physical activity and poor eating habits. I am trying to combat those things while I am stuck in the DC area. I tried to go to Florida with my parents but I was rehabing a torn rotator cuff and didn't know if I could get physical therapy in my parents' retirement village amidst farmland in Florida. Once I got better, the plane didn't fly.

How are you doing?

Best wishes and stay well,

Hi Scherrone,

I think your assessment of our situation is fairly accurate. As an older person with CP, an ex-smoker, and with a history of asthma, I am definitely in the vulnerable group.

I too watched “Crip Camp” last night, a wonderful and nostalgic view of the past; so many scenes vividly depicted the born rebel in me.

Hi Everyone,

I’m so glad we are having this conversation. So far, I’m healthy and taking all of the necessary precautions to stay that way. I have had to really readjust my assistant staff and take a stringent approach to household procedures. As someone who never wanted medical staff as assistants I have actually done a 180. Most of my staff are now wearing scrubs, going through a cleaning process before entering the main part of my house and they also have to agree to adhere to the same standards in their own house. We have been on Shelter in Place for two and a half weeks and we will most likely continue to be on this status until the end of May. I am very worried about our community. There has been a lot of press lately related to who will get services and who will not. A lady with cancer was told yesterday if she needed that she should plan on comfort care if she experiences any complications to her chemo, because she will not be given a respirator if complications occur. This was told to an otherwise healthy 50 year old woman. Things are not going to be pretty. And I think we really need to be advocates right now.

We watched Crip Camp last week. It is awesome! I feel like we need to mandate all of the people who are making decisions about who receives healthcare watch this film. We should be tagging people on social media about the film who need to see it.

All the best,

Alette

I take Vitamin C, B and D to help support my immune system.  I also take C60 oil because Covid-19 generates a lot of free radicals and C60 is a free radical vacuum.

I have trouble spitting too and I was working on turning a small (2 hp) Shop-vac  into at spit sucker.  My GF won't let me though: "I don't want you going to the ER with a collapsed lung!" she said.

Vitamin C is important though because the Virus can grow fast unless it encounters a lot of Vitamin C.

I also drink Chaga (mushroom) tea.  An senior herbal doctor in China gave his patients Chaga tea  and they never got the virus.

Just do what you can and enjoy life: Don't worry; be happy!
