Hey all!

In case you haven't heard, bike and pedestrian access on Silver Lake Park Road is under threat.

Following a reported sexual assault attempt on April 3, three officials—District Attorney Mike McMahon, Borough President Vito Fossella, and Council Member Kamillah Hanks—recklessly called for the reintroduction of motor vehicles to Silver Lake Park. Borough Parks Commissioner Lynda Ricciadone rubber-stamped their request without any public consultation or due process. Opening Silver Lake to cars will do nothing to prevent crime, but it will create grave danger for the thousands of Staten Islanders who rely on the park for recreation. Unspoken is the issue of drivers harassing park users (especially women), which was a common experience when the park road was open to cars. Given the history of requests from drivers to reopen Silver Lake Park Road as a short cut between Victory Blvd and Forest Ave, this measure feels more like the shameless exploitation of an awful attack in capitulation to drivers looking for a traffic detour than a truly thought out response to safety needs in a beloved park that serves members of the community and beyond.

TA is standing with Silver Lake Park users calling for:
  • A reversal of the rash decision to reopen Silver Lake Park Road to cars
  • An opportunity for the public, especially regular park users, to offer their input on the future of Silver Lake Park Road
  • Long term safety solutions through infrastructure investment in the park, better lighting, public bathrooms, and other upgrades to make Silver Lake Park safe and welcoming for the whole community
This Saturday, we are hosting an emergency rally at Forest Avenue and Silver Lake Park Road at noon, calling for Silver Lake Park to remain car-free. Feel free to come by with family,  friends, and (well-trained) pets!

Best,
--

Hi Rose.

Thank you for reaching out, sharing the scope of the situation.
Unfortunately, I have another commitment this Saturday 4/19, so I cannot make the Silver Lake Park Road emergency rally.

Please keep me on your TASI list.
Kind regards, Jackie

Unfortunately, I can't make it, but I agree with Ted " I think this forum is a good way for us to discuss all kinds of things; we can do a lot even without holding regular meetings. This way, everyone has a chance to speak to any/all topics even for those who can make it to an in-person meeting. "

FYI everyone I called Hanks' office yesterday and think that is one of the best tactics to slow this down, thanks to Rose for the suggestion.  Even if you're not a constituent, the park is in her district and she's running for re-election and may be responsive to pressure.   Her district office #is:  718-556-7370

I'll continue sharing updates for those who aren't able to make it this Saturday!

Also, if you haven't yet, there are a few other ways to support!
  • We have a petition at https://act.transalt.org/a/carfree_slp
  • Call CM Hanks, BP Fossella, and DA McMahon, saying you want SLP Rd kept car-free
    • (McMahon and Fossella are the key supporters, but Hanks is the most swayable, and McMahon and Fossella need her support)
  • Call 311, saying you want Silver Lake Park Road kept car-free
  • The West Brighton Civic Association is also having its next Civic meeting on Tuesday, April 29 at 7PM. Silver Lake Park Road is on the agenda, and they are inviting a larger audience to join and share their views since they know that Silver Lake Park is an important park for the entire region. They meet at FIG Church at the corner of Bard and Forest Avenues.

I thought I wouldn't, but now it seems I probably will be able to attend the rally tomorrow.

Will you be having speakers and do you need one more? I happened to check my email this afternoon at the library, right after I'd discovered a book on road ecology, and I've put together something about why now, right as bird migration season is beginning, is exactly the wrong time to open Silver Lake Park Road, adjacent to Silver Lake Park, close to Clove Lakes Park (probably the best on Staten Island for small songbirds during Spring migration), and very close to Staten Island's newest Bald Eagle nest in Silver Lake Golf Course, very close to Silver Lake Park Road.

Needs a little polishing, but I could have it ready by noon tomorrow--or, if it's not needed then, for the Civic Association or to send as a letter to the elected officials you mentioned.

I'm so glad you'll be able to make it, Karen! We could totally use you as a speaker. If you're able, putting that in a letter to elected officials would be wonderful, too!
