Hey all!

I have two special announcements regarding this weekend and tons of updates to share!

Announcements:
  1. 🧹 Clean up: 🧹
The Goethals Road North Clean Up originally scheduled for this Saturday, May 4, is being pushed back to next Saturday, May 11th. The time will remain the same, 12-2 PM. Bob and I are moving the clean-up to avoid interfering with Jane's Walk Weekend!
  2. 🚶🏃 Jane's Walk Weekend:🚶🏃
I'm co-hosting one of this weekend's Jane's Walk events with Andrew Blancheo, who some of you may know. It'll be a special Jane's Run (the running version of a Jane's Walk.) It starts at the St George Ferry Terminal and goes through St. George, New Brighton, Jones Woods, The Goodhue Center grounds, Allison Pond Park, and Snug Harbor. Our themes will focus on history, nature, and embracing a mix of preservation and change. You can browse the full list of Jane's Walks happening this weekend here
News:
  1. This morning, the DOT released a "Connecting to the Core" report detailing several street improvement projects they will roll out to help support Congestion Pricing. Unsurprisingly, most projects focus on Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. There are three projects planned for Staten Island, though:
    • Extending the protected portion of the Richmond Terrace Bike lane
    • Improving pedestrian conditions on Bay Street and a portion of Richmond Terrace
    • Extending the Richmond Avenue bus lane to extend between Arthur Kill Road and Forest Avenue
While it's too little too late, it's still a start and dovetails very nicely with discussions we've been having around Richmond Terrace. In response, Transportation Alternatives has released this report detailing additional steps we believe the City and partners (including the MTA) need to take immediately to make CP work.

(Note: the DOT's promised actions are in addition to promises the MTA has already made, detailed here.)
  1. Yesterday, Mayor Adams was on Staten Island for a Community Conversation at IS 75 in Huguenot. (The event was very poorly advertised or announced, as most of his events are, and I found out about it too minute to spread the word.) That said, at the event John Kilcullen asked Mayor Adams if he would support Staten Island in getting a fast ferry route to Bay Ridge. The mayor reaffirmed his support for the idea but didn't commit to working with the EDC to get it done, so I'm in talks with the St George Civic Association on hosting a follow up rally to press the mayor on this with partners in Bay Ridge. I'll keep everyone posted.

(Over the past few weeks this issue has been getting a lot of attention after canvassing and press pushes I've been coordinating with the St George Civic led CM Hanks and Brannan to write a joint letter to the EDC/ Adams demanding the route.)

There's a campaign by TA to pass these laws to make bicycling safer

The email campaign to pass Stop as Yield (Idaho Stop) and 3 Foot Safe Passing is now live.

Transportation Alternatives/NYS Complete Streets Coalition have set up the form to email legislators:

And NY Bicycling Coalition is hosting the social media and support materials:

Each bill passed one house in 2023 and we need every cyclist’s help to get them over the finish—particularly in NYC—so please get the word out to SIBC members.
