It looks like the DOT wants to bring them back!

A plan for pedestrian safety enhancements and return of the Father Cap bike lane (this time, parking protected) is coming before CB2's Transportation Committee tonight. Opportunities for public input aren't always allowed during CB committee meetings, but you know what the usual complaints will be:
  • Cyclists can already use the boardwalk
  • The cyclists will get hit or bring chaos to the road, blah, blah, blah
  • Too many cars use Father Cap! It'll cause massive traffic jams 🙄
I would be prepared with counterpoints for each:
  • Cyclists must compete with runners, rollerbladers, tourists, young children, and families on the boardwalk. The boardwalk is good for a slow ride on a summer day, but it's not an effective path for commuting cyclists
  • Especially when paired with other road-safety measures - like pedestrian improvements, bike lanes are a proven safety technique that allows our streets to be more accessible for everyone
  • A 6-lane urban road with bus lanes and left turn lanes can generally handle at least 44,000 vehicles daily. In 2023 (the last year I could get data) Father Capp carried an average of 21,657 vehicles. There is more than enough space for more dynamic uses of Father Capp
That said, here are the meeting details:

The other problems with riding on the boardwalk are:
1. Riding on the boardwalk with a road bike and thin tires is dangerous and at very least, very annoying
2. Getting up there wastes time when you are just traveling to a destination and not going for a leisure ride.

I agree with your feelings about riding on the boardwalk. I always avoid it, too many vibrations. I prefer riding on Father Capodanno Blvd. We use the bus lane as a bike lane. And I haven't seen a bus there in all the time I ride in it

Great things to bring up if you can make it to the meeting tonight!

After  visiting  Philadelphia, while Bloomberg was still the mayor, I saw that their bus lines are designated and marked as bus & bike lanes and mentioned it to him, advocating for the same here.

Thanks Rose!   Do you know if written comments would be helpful for DOT and /or CB 2?

It couldn't hurt!

For CB2, comments would go to their District Manager, Debrah Derrico- dder...@cb.nyc.gov

I'll need to find out who at DOT is managing this project on their end!

Some additional thoughts regarding Capodanno bike lane. Better late than never.

I thought there were signs saying no bike riding on boardwalk. Was I imagining things?

There is a pathway parallel to the boardwalk for bike riders, but there are typically as many pedestrians on the pathway as on the boardwalk.

What happens when the Army Corps of Engineers finally starts construction of the Sea Wall?

Hi all,

I have some updates from the meeting last night-

The plans for Father Capp are sadly, far more limited than the meeting notice made it seem. The DOT is only looking at a very small portion of Father Capodanno between Midland Ave and the dead-end turn-around. It's part of a larger road dieting plan in response to a pedestrian fatality at Lincoln and Father Cap last year. The good news is that the DOT looks primed to go forward with plans with or without CB2's approval.

Attached are some slides from last night showing the current plans, though there will be slight adjustments in response to feedback received last night.
Also, the project lead for this was identified as Maggie Loesch from the DOT. No contact info was given for her, but I'm guessing it's mlo...@dot.nyc.gov
You can also give feedback to the CB2's District Manager at  dder...@cb.nyc.gov but I would focus on reaching out to the DOT with feedback

Thanks very much for sharing the info, Rose! I'm with you that it's a disappointment that they are only proposing the change for a few blocks at the end of the line; however, maybe it's just as well, since I don't like the design, especially the parking-protected lane. I've ridden a lot of those lanes in Manhattan and most decidedly do NOT find them to be a safety enhancement. Putting the bikes on the other side of the parked cars takes us out of the consciousness of drivers; consequently exacerbating the conflict at every intersection. I would much rather be next to the traffic so they are aware of me as they approach an intersection preparing to turn. It would be even better if New York could adopt the California rule that calls upon drivers to merge into the bike lane (whether real or imaginary) prior to turning rather than cutting in front  of cyclists (which drivers so often do, rather than letting bikes get through the intersection before they (the drivers) turn across the bike lane.

I would also like to see a design for this project to reflect something that could be useful on the rest of Father Cap Blvd, which the current proposal doses not. I would propose the alternative as follows: Reduce the center median strip to 9 feet, allowing room for a 10 ft lane next to the center median, a 15-fi lane with sharrows, and a 9-ft parking lane, as shown in the sketch below.

I am also disappointed that it's for such a small section. More annoying but we'll see how it works.
