Wednesday Hike

Details

Location: Shindagin Hollow State Forest, Brooktondale

For this hike, we walk along the edge of the deep and atmospheric Shindagin Hollow gorge, which runs along the edge of Shindagin Hollow Road as it descends from the high ground near Central Chapel Road down to the junction with Gulf Creek Road. About halfway down, the trail along the rim ends and the gorge veers in and runs just a few feet from the edge of the roadway.

After this point, the road itself is on the rim of the precipice. We usually head down into the gorge just before this happens and make our way south along the creek. The whole walk is beautiful and picturesque, with a number of lively ups and downs, pine groves, and stream crossings. If you don’t want to descend into the gorge and walk along the stream, you can head downhill for a while on Shindagin Hollow Road itself, a very scenic road walk.

This is the description for hike #26 on the Ithaca Hikers website. Mary W. will lead.

From Mary: This hike may be partially rerouted to avoid crossing the creek if there's been a lot of rain. In that case, we'll hike some of the beautiful (bike) trails to the west of Shindagin Rd. This area may wow us with wildflowers, we'll see!

We'll meet in the dirt parking lot along upper Shindagin Hollow Road just beyond the last house.

Directions from downtown Ithaca:

  • Take NY-79 E toward Slaterville.
  • Turn R on Boiceville Rd.
  • After about half a mile, turn L onto Central Chapel Rd.
  • After 2.6 miles, turn L onto Shindagin Hollow Rd.
  • Watch for our cars after about half a mile.

We start promptly at 9:30, so plan to be at the meeting point a few minutes early.

As of 8/31, the weather is expected to be sunny and pleasant with a high of 74F.

We are in tick season, so be sure to check yourself and your clothes carefully after the hike. Wearing insect repellent and permethrin-treated clothing is also a good idea. Read about tick-prevention strategies here.

IN CASE OF INCLEMENT WEATHER, any changes will be announced as early as possible, so always check your email before leaving home to drive to the trailhead.

PLEASE NOTE: Hiking carries inherent risks. Before you join a hike, make sure you are at an appropriate fitness level to hike for two hours over rough terrain in varying weather conditions. Also, come with appropriate hiking gear, such as footwear designed for hiking. In the summer, you should carry water and use insect repellent and/or sun protection. For winter hikes, foot traction is necessary for icy conditions. For more information about hiking gear, see our frequently asked questions page. Hikers join us at their own risk, so be prepared!

Saturday Hike

Details

Location: Texas Hollow State Forest, Hector

The Finger Lakes National Forest, a couple of miles north, is a lot more popular with hikers, but this trail is just as good or even better. It has everything that goes into making a quality walk. The trail head itself is atmospheric, with pine trees clumped along the road at the parking area — it’s especially fun on a gloomy day. The terrain is lively and varied. There are several big fields and ponds and some very picturesque open views — dark and brooding pine groves — some lovely deciduous stretches — it gives a good workout but it’s not a killer. Even the drive to the trailhead is pleasant, passing through some really beautiful rolling open countryside with great views.

This is hike #41 on the Ithaca Hikers website. Casey will lead.

We'll meet on Texas Hollow Road about one mile south of Route 79. The meeting point is about a 25-minute drive from downtown Ithaca. Take NY-79 W toward Watkins Glen. About 6 miles past Mecklenburg, turn left onto Texas Hollow Road and watch for our cars after about a mile.

We leave promptly at 9:30, so plan to be at the meeting point a few minutes early.

As of 8/31, the weather is expected to be cloudy with a chance of showers and a high of 69F.

Sunday Hike

Details

Location: Hinchcliff Family Preserve, Spafford, Onondaga County

From the Finger Lakes Land Trust website:

"The Hinchcliff Family Preserve consists of two sections. The largest extends from Spafford Landing to just north of Glen Haven on the east side of Skaneateles Lake. There, a 1.4-mile trail loop passes mostly through northern hardwood forest at various stages of succession. Watch and listen here for Wood Thrushes, Scarlet Tanagers, and other breeding songbirds in spring and summer. The trail also winds past mixed hemlock-hardwood forest, as well as several ephemeral and perennial streams, gullies, and waterfalls. Grassy clearings offer habitat for sparrows and other open-country birds, as well as sweeping views of the wooded slope and the lake. Along the way, you will also see remnants of former habitation and work at the site – the foundation of an old dairy barn, a 1937 Chevrolet army truck possibly used by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and a grand stone fireplace and chimney that once served as the centerpiece of the Wickwire family cottage."

Please note that dogs must be leashed in this nature preserve.

This is hike #60-8 on the Ithaca Hikers website. Please note that there are several hikes listed under hike #60--make sure you're heading to the right one!

We'll meet in the parking area for the nearby High Vista Nature Preserve, located at 7556 Vincent Hill Road in Homer.

We leave promptly at 9:40, so plan to be at the meeting point a few minutes early.

As of 9/2, the weather forecast predicts mixed sun and clouds with a high of 60F.

Ticks are still active, so be sure to check yourself and your clothes carefully after the hike. Applying insect repellent and wearing permethrin-treated clothing is also a good idea. Read about tick-prevention strategies here.

If you have questions about the hike location, please contact Jim before the hike at 607-327-1062. Often there is poor or no cellphone service at trailheads, so it's good to make sure you know where we're meeting before you set out.

IN CASE OF INCLEMENT WEATHER, any changes will be announced as early as possible, so always check your email before leaving home to drive to the trailhead.
