Hello fellow Stone Bridge Drivers,

As you know our 2020 event has been canceled.

But we do have some unfinished business. Most of you responded to Carole to let her know which option you prefered and we appreciate that.

Here is a reminder of the 3 choices:

1.       Get a full refund.

  1. Roll your registration over to be signed up for 2021.
  2. (Preferred Method) Treat your 2020 registration fee as a tax-deductible donation to the festival that sorely needs funds to be able to survive this crisis.

Although many of you responded, there are a number who haven’t gotten around to it yet and we need to know now, so that we can continue our planning for the 2021 event.

Founders Tour has 15 who haven’t responded yet.

FLX has 7.

Glenkhana still has one hold out.

There are 26 Glenora Runners.

Knapp Sporting Roadster has 10.

Concorso 11.

And Tour de Marque has 15.

Now I know, because we haven’t made the decision yet as to whether the 2021 Featured Marque will be Alfa Romeo or something else, that makes it hard for Tour de Marque and FLX participants to make a decision. That decision should be coming very soon. On the other hand if you choose the preferred option of donating your registration fee, the problem would be solved without having to wait for an announcement.

So if you are in that group of undecideds, please make up your mind and contact Carole at prom...@gmail.com or 607-535-3003 and let her know which event you are in and what your choice is. Do NOT reply to this email because that info goes to the wrong place.

Keep wearing your mask while keeping six feet from the car ahead,

Casey

What wouldn’t Alfa be the Marque next year?

Thanks

Hi John,

What I can tell you is that there are a number of factors that go into choosing each year’s Featured Marque. Some have to do with history, some have to do with logistics, and some have to do with how willing the various car clubs are to get involved. And then there are the numbers involved. Chances are Borgward is not going to be the featured marque anytime soon. No offense to all of you Borgward Izabella fans out there. And don’t expect the Humber Super Snipe in the near future either.

Additionally we like to consider what SVRA is doing relative to their featured marque. Does our featured marque have to be the same as theirs? Not necessarily, but it is better when the two coincide.

We try to schedule our featured marques a number of years in advance for planning purposes, although we don’t announce the next year’s pick until it is time because you never know what sort of pandemic might throw a monkey wrench into all of the planning.

Be patient, we should be able to announce the 2021 Featured Marque soon.

Hello Casey,

With all the necessary changes and re planning done this year; wonder why something like a tribute to Trans-Am racing couldn't
be planned .... Mustang, Camaro, Firebird, Charger (Challenger) etc.  These were the glory days at the Glen and fondly remembered
when we came as part of team cars from Toronto - Marks & Richards Racing.

Just getting older day by day, but "those were the days".  Looking forward to your 2021 plans being unveiled.  We enjoyed being
a part of the 2005 Mustang tribute for sure.

Hi Group:

I appreciate Barry and Ann for bringing this up. It was a key event at Watkins Glen during the late 60’s and early 70’s.  I suggested it over a year ago before you selected before Alfa Romero was selected as the Marque (for the second time). Because of the number of retro cars (especially Mustangs) I would limit initial  registration period to classics (over 25 years old) and even give the pre 1972 cars that would have actually participated a head start on registration. Don’t forget the Javelins too.

Hello Bill,

Sorry, I completely forgot of Mark Donohue and Roger Penske with the Javelins, recalled the weekend when
everyone seemed to have an AMC red-white-blue jacket.

Think your proposal seems to make a lot of sense with limiting registration to over 25 years, and special
consideration for Trans-Am era models up to pre 1972 cars.

Hope the powers that be will consider this suggestion.

Thanks Barry - you may have notice my fat finger typing. The Firebird is a ‘67’  convertible (not a ‘66’). I was 21 the year it was introduced. 😀 Bill

Bill,

I was so busy reading the "66 Firebird OHC" designation ...overhead cam of course, that I missed the 1966.

I have not run across one of these power plant equipped models for a long time.  Always liked the Firebirds
and when we were younger (20 years old at thier intro;, thought this was a revolutionary new concept to a
North American vehicle.  We owned a Mazda RX3 rotary engine equipped station wagon for a number of years ...
another new concept.

I wonder if the powers that be are reading our emails?

Part of it was I had a 66 Mustang Coupe. The local junk man bought it for his wife. He gave me market price.

No mater what the powers that be decide, they do a great job at planning and managing the festival.

I try attend once every two to three years. The Firebird has done two festivals and one lake to lake. I also have a BMW Z3 that has done two Knapp tours and the last time I was there was we entered the Cars of the Autobahn. Great Time!

I hope they choose the Trans Am Cars before ether me or the Firebird are no longer track worthy.

Hello Jeff,

Glad to hear we have another person in favour of classic cars from the Trans-Am era - featuring those marque vehicles, with pre- 1972 models
only.  I wonder if these emails are going to Casey and others involved in the decision and planning for 2021?

Thank you for your support with this idea.

Yes, every one of these emails goes to almost everyone on the Grand Prix Festival Committee. Yes, we pay attention to all of your comments. The good, the bad, and fortunately we don’t seem to get any of the ugly.

Just because we pay close attention, that doesn’t mean we will always agree with what you say or think. There are times when your comments seem to make a lot of sense, but there are some inner working type details that you are not aware of that can make your idea a nonstarter.

On the other hand there are times when your comments make so much sense, we take the suggestion and act on it. One that I can think of recently is that if we had been able to put on our event this year in it’s entirety, you would have seen that everyone that has anything to do with directing traffic (with the exception of the police) would have been wearing yellow/greenish safety vests. And you would have been instructed to follow their instructions and to ignore any directions from well-meaning people without one of those safety vests.

Franklin Street gets very crowded during your Stone Bridge Driver Laps. Lots of photographers, pedestrians, spectators and often a few people in the street who shouldn’t be there. From the perspective of a Stone Bridge Driver, trying to keep up with the car ahead, it can be a visual nightmare.

Last year some of you alerted us to this situation and we reacted and came up with what we hope will be a viable solution, or at least a big improvement. One of the things many of us on the committee learned from Terrie (who used to have a retail store in Pen Yann), was that you should always try to look at your business from the eyes of the customer. Try to see what the customer is seeing. Try to understand what the customer is experiencing.

As for this discussion relative to the Featured Marque, what you have been suggesting had been previously discussed at a number of our meetings and like a lot of those Pony Cars, it hasn’t gotten enough traction yet to get on the list, but it also hasn’t been taken off of the table yet. I realize that part of why those cars lacked traction was the amount of HP, but they also just didn’t have a lot or rear grip as compared to many of the European cars of that era. Including the under two liter Trans-Am race cars.

So, the idea is still on the table and we do appreciate your input. Be patient, we hope to have a decision on the 2021 Featured Marque fairly soon.

Remember that a major priority of the Grand Prix Festival, (beyond safety) is to Have Fun With Cars!

And you all know the next priority. To keep up with the car ahead of you.

A wise(a**), old(think moss-covered) saw doctor I know from Burdett NY once reminded me about 25yrs ago on the topic of safety:

“Without safety, you can only have fun once!”.

True then and true now.  Keep up the great work Casey and team.

Hi Christopher: I’m with you on the safety (don’t do something stupid and ruin it for everyone) and just plain having a good time with other car enthusiast.

Although I did put a plug in for the Trans Am (Pony) cars last year what surprised me was the duplicate selection of the Alfa Romeo. If I am correct the Alfa was the Marque in 2010.

I’ve participated in the festivals featuring the Porsche, Mini, MG, Cars of the Autobahn and at lest two others since 2005. I missed the the year Mustang was featured. That was the one that should have included the Trans Am Cars but the rest of the field got left out.

Bottom line is I hope you want duplicate the featured Marque.

Thanks for the great job the festival committee does in planning a great week.

If I recall, mustang was the featured Marque in 2012, Alfa in 2010, just a point of information, which has probably already been pointed out.

Do we have a venue to post cars for sale.  Our family is selling a 1960 TR3 (featured car on the front page of the Star Gazette "GO" section September 2001 covering our event from 2000)  Over $35,000 invested and selling for $26,000.
Please let me know about potential listings potentials.

Hello Casey,

Thank you for printing this list.  As we get older, the years seem to pass by so fast.  I had thought 2004 was a Mustang
year but then read this and see it was 2012.  I must have been thinking of Pittsburgh vintage weekend, where they
honoured the Mustang in 2004 I believe.

I don't envy the work you have to go through to choose the yearly marque, but wish you all the best with your committee
for a successful 2021 weekend ... oh ... it seems so far away though!

Keep your distanceing and stay safe to all the stonebridge drivers and organizers.

Hello fellow Stine Bridge Drivers,

I am happy to announce that the Founders Tour has a new starting location, and a new name thanks to it’s new sponsor.

It is now the Ryan William Vineyard Founders Tour. Check them out at     https://www.thetastingbarn.com/

The Grand Prix Festival Committee and the long time Founders Tour chair, Carl Benson are all looking forward to working with Ryan and the staff at the Ryan William Vineyard to make the 2021 Ryan William Vineyard Founders Tour a continued success and a fun event.

Those who are signed up for the 2021 Ryan William Vineyard Founders Tour will find the location and the operation there to be a real treat and a great way to start off your Grand Prix Festival day.

As for the 2021 featured marque decision, we are still in a holding pattern at the moment, but I expect that we will be reaching a decision fairly soon.

Keep on having fun with cars, buying wine, and keeping 6 feet from the car ahead, while wearing a mask.

I have been re-reading this email for a while. looking at the list I realize I have only missed the 2004 event that's 17 years! While I think the Trans AM cars would be interesting limiting early registration or restricting registrations to any year car would be unfair to everyone else! If you want to register early use the early registration form available in your tour package like everyone else. Sorry if you don't like what I have to say but I think it needed to be said!
