Portimao added to F1 calendar for 2027, 2028 (F1)
Five years on from a surprise inclusion in the COVID 19-affected 2020 calendar,
Portimao
is set for another shock appearance on the Formula 1 calendar for 2027.
News of the Portuguese Grand Prix’s return came Tuesday, with the track expected to replace Zandvoort and the outgoing Dutch Grand Prix after next year. It’ll bring another F1 date to Portimao after the facility’s two-year stint on the calendar in 2020 and
2021.
Local governance had targeted an F1 return and will now get it for 2027 and 2028. The Portuguese Grand Prix was previously held at Estoril from 1984 through 1996. The initial two-year return was fueled by pandemic-related cancellations elsewhere, but Portimao
has now been given a true return on merit.
Imola is dropping off the F1 calendar in 2026, with the Madring taking its place for a new Spanish Grand Prix. Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is also expected to drop off the F1 calendar after next year, but it could return as part of the rotation-based system
that’ll see Spa-Francorchamps host races in 2028 and 2030.
Thailand has attempted to score an F1 return, with rumors of a street race in Bangkok from 2028. Others including Rwanda and Argentina have signaled their interest in future slots on the calendar. .

Greg Biffle Dies in Airplane Crash (NASCAR Cup)
NASCAR Hall of Fame nominee Greg Biffle, wife Cristina, daughter Emma, son Ryder and three others died in a plane crash at the Statesville Regional Airport north of Charlotte, N.C. on Thursday morning. Biffle was 55 years old.
Biffle’s Cessna Citation crashed while landing after initially departing for Florida on Thursday morning. Garrett Mitchell, known on YouTube as Cleetus McFarland,
posted
on Facebook that the family was on its way to spend the afternoon with him. The incident led to the death of Biffle and his family, along with Dennis Dutton and his son, Jack, and Craig Wadsworth.
Local authorities confirmed casualties in a press conference shared around noon ET, noting that the airport was closed and an investigation was ongoing. First Sergeant Chris Knox of the North Carolina Highway Portal confirmed Biffle to be among the deceased
in a late afternoon press conference citing visual witness evidence, noting that the others are pending confirmation from a medical examiner.. He described the incident as “one of the worst crashes” he’d seen and “a tragedy you can’t fathom this time of year.”
Knox noted that the investigation is ongoing. The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office was assisting the investigation alongside the North Carolina Highway Patrol and Federal Aviation Administration on Thursday. The National Transportation Safety Board is expected
to take over the investigation on Friday.
The families of the deceased put out a joint statement on Thursday afternoon. It read:
We are devastated by the loss of our loved ones. This tragedy has left all our families heartbroken beyond words.
Greg and Cristina were devoted parents and active philanthropists whose lives were centered around their young son Ryder and Greg’s daughter Emma (mother - Nicole Lunders).
Emma was a wonderful human being with a kind soul who was loved by many people. Ryder was an active, curious and infinitely joyful child.
Dennis Dutton and his son Jack were deeply loved as well, and their loss is felt by all who knew them.
Craig Wadsworth was beloved by many in the NASCAR community and will be missed by those who knew him.
Each of them meant everything to us, and their absence leaves an immeasurable void in our lives.
We ask for privacy, compassion and understanding as we grieve and begin to process this unimaginable loss. We are grateful for the kindness and support that has been extended to our families during this incredibly difficult time.
At this moment, our focus is on honoring their lives and supporting one another.
A native of Vancouver, Wash., Biffle came onto the NASCAR scene in the late 1990s after showing promise at Northwestern short tracks. He made his name known with a pair of dominant seasons in the Craftsman Truck Series, earning 14 wins and a series championship
from 1999 through 2000 to secure a promotion to the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series (then Busch Series) in 2001. Biffle then went on to score nine wins and another championship over two years in NASCAR’s second tour to earn a leap up to the Cup Series in 2003.
Over the next decade, Biffle emerged as one of the stars of NASCAR’s most popular era. Driving for Jack Roush and known by the fanbase as “The Biff,” Biffle earned a lone win in the Pepsi 400 during his rookie campaign to start a streak of six-straight winning
seasons, including a six-win effort in 2005 that led him to second in the championship - the closest any driver’s come to claiming titles in all three of NASCAR’s national series.
Roush’s Cup program began to decline as the 2000s transitioned into the 2010s, but Biffle remained competitive. He earned additional victories in 2010, 2012 and 2013, secured six top-10 points finishes and made the playoffs seven times from 2005 through 2014.
The veteran continued to compete in Cup through the 2016 season before retiring from full-time competition at the age of 46. All told, he earned 19 Cup wins, 20 O’Reilly victories and 17 wins in the Truck Series - including a surprising triumph in a 2019 one-off
for Kyle Busch Motorsports at Texas Motor Speedway. Biffle was named one of NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers in 2023, was inducted into the North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame in September and had his name added to the list of NASCAR Hall of Fame nominees
in 2024.
Biffle’s career wound down after his Cup exit, but he still made sporadic appearances. He made another Truck Series start in 2020, returned for a five-race Cup stint with NY Racing Team in 2022 and made three appearances in the ARCA Menards Series West in 2024
and 2025, with a best finish of third at Tri-City Raceway. He had recently made appearances in Mitchell’s YouTube videos.
The true highlight of Biffle’s life beyond full-time racing came in 2024, when he helped rescue stranded residents and provide aid to those impacted by the devastation of Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina.

was bestowed with the National Motorsports Press Association’s Myers Brothers Award for his efforts in November 2024.

NASCAR is devastated by the tragic loss of Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, daughter Emma, son Ryder, Craig Wadsworth and Dennis and Jack Dutton in a fatal plane crash.
Greg was more than a champion driver, he was a beloved member of the NASCAR community, a fierce competitor, and a friend to so many. His passion for racing, his integrity, and his commitment to fans and fellow competitors alike made a lasting impact on the
sport.
On the track, Greg’s talent and tenacity earned him championships in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series, as well as numerous wins and accolades in the NASCAR Cup Series. Beyond his racing career, he gave of himself for the betterment
of our community. Most notably, Greg spent countless hours of his time helping the citizens of North Carolina during the disasters that followed Hurricane Helene. His tireless work saved lives.
Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to Greg’s entire family, friends, and all who were touched by his life.

FIA rolls out new terminology for 2026 F1 cars (F1)
The FIA unveiled the planned changes Wednesday as part of the rollout of its 2026 technical plans. With the new-look cars come several changes, with hopes of simplifying the terminology for prospective fans.
One of the biggest changes that’ll be seen in each race is a shift away from DRS, the name of the former overtaking aid. The new assistance will be referred to as “Overtake,” though its execution will be similar in concept. Drivers within a second of a car
will be able to deploy an energy boost to help them catch and pass the leading machine.
Beyond that, there will be a separate “Boost” function, allowing drivers to use the energy recovery system (ERS) for strategic energy deployments. This comes with the 2026 change to bring electrical energy into a near-50:50 split with the internal combustion
engine, changing the dynamics of the racing itself.
Outside of engine power, there are also new aerodynamic elements at play. A new active aerodynamic system will see cars given a separate “Straight Mode” and “Corner Mode,” with the Corner version providing a typical, full-downforce position and the Straight
option opening up front and rear wing flaps to reduce drag and increase top speed. Teams will be limited to designated areas to utilize Straight Mode, with the determination based on a minimum straight length.
There have also been efforts to improve the ability to navigate dirty air from a trailing car - a continuation of a goal started with the launch of the prior car in 2022.

FIA confirms new constructor for WRC’s 2027 ruleset (Rally)
A new constructor is coming to the FIA World Rally Championship in 2027.
The FIA revealed Wednesday that Project Rally One (PRO) will become the first tuner to develop a car for the tour’s new-look 2027 regulations. Led by engineer Lionel Hansen, ex-FIA rally director Yves Matton and Prospeed, the project will design, build and
homologate a 2027-spec car for the tour’s next era.
“The entry of Project Rally One to the FIA World Rally Championship is a hugely important moment for us. To be the first to present a new car for the WRC’s next era is something we are extremely proud of,” Hansen said in a team release. “The introduction of
the WRC27 regulations gave us the opportunity to take the step into the championship. The new technical framework creates the right environment for independent projects like ours, allowing us to develop a car from the ground up and compete against manufacturers
at the highest level.
“The progress we have already made gives us real confidence in the direction we are taking. With the chassis complete and the prototype now in assembly, we are in a strong position as we prepare for the first shakedown this spring and continue development towards
the car’s debut.”
PRO is the second manufacturer confirmed for WRC’s 2027 ruleset, following Toyota. Its WRC entry follows an effort to develop a homologated Porsche 992 Rally GT car for 2025. FIA technical director Xavier Mestelan Pinon had revealed in July that at least two
tuners were working on projects for the 2027.

Significant progress within the project has already been made. The chassis design and build have been completed, with prototype assembly now underway. Once finalised, the car will begin a comprehensive development campaign, including more than 6,000 km of
gravel and asphalt testing ahead of its homologation, with the first shakedown scheduled for spring of 2026.
The car will of course be subject to FIA homologation before it can compete with 10 cars required to be produced within 24 months of the homologation date. The brand must commit two cars to at least 50% of the WRC calendar in its first season.
The WRC will go live with new technical regulations after the 2026 season, with plans for them to establish a more afford and flexible platform for the next decade. Cars will deliver roughly 300 horsepower at a €345,000 cost cap, with plans to utilize some
components from Rally2, the WRC’s secondary Rally series. These changes are being made with hopes of enticing new manufacturers and teams to compete with the tour.
