NASCAR changes rules to allow for early stage breaks with ill-timed cautions (NASCAR)
Stage breaks aren’t going away in NASCAR anytime soon, but common sense has prevailed in the event of cautions near the end of the stage.
NASCAR announced Thursday that stages will now end if there’s a caution inside of the 10 laps remaining, opening the door for the sanctioning body to avoid halting the momentum of races in the event of ill-timed yellow flags just prior to stage ends. The change will begin this weekend at Iowa Speedway.
The field will be frozen and points will be paid out as soon as the order can be confirmed using scoring loops and video replay. Pit road will be opened as soon as possible, with hopes of getting the race back underway.
In making this change, NASCAR’s brass hope to avoid the lengthy caution periods that have extended race times in recent years. This was a talking point leaving the Brickyard 400, where teams spent the better part of a half-hour riding under yellow as a late caution led to a one-lap shootout in Stage 1. The sanctioning body had confirmed through its “Hauler Talk” podcast that competition officials were reviewing ways to mitigate the length of caution periods around stage ends.
“What happened at Indy, where we have seen far too often, a caution comes out before the stage break and we run a number of caution laps and we try and get back green, and the stage break comes and we’re back to caution, long period of caution laps and not enough green flag racing,” NASCAR President Steve O’Donnell said in a social media statement. “We heard you. We want to make a change.”
It’s worth noting that this rule could be adapted moving forward. A flat 10 laps in simple and will work for the remainder of the 2026 schedule, with only ovals left on the calendar. But it may need a revisit for 2027, when the series returns to lengthy road courses.
There could also be potential unintended consequences should teams stay out and catch a timely yellow, benefitting from unusual (or even unplanned) strategic plays.
But this is poised to be well-received overall - a common sense solution that will improve the overall flow of races throughout the year.

 F1 financials hits hard in Q2 as Middle East issues shift the calendar (F1)
The series released financial details Thursday that indicated a 38% drop in revenue compared to the prior year in the second quarter of 2026. The revenue fell from $1.22 billion in 2025 to $764 million the year.
Operating income took an even bigger hit, falling from $293 million to $73 million - a 61% drop. Overall, the adjusted OIBDA (operating income before depreciation) fell from $361 million to $139 million. Teams took a hit as a result, receiving $316 million compared to $513 million one year ago.
These results are unfortunate, but they’re also heavily skewed thanks to the loss of races in the quarter. Impacted by both pre-planned calendar shifts and changes tied to the current conflicts in the Middle East, F1 had just five races during this time period compared to nine in 2025. Bahrain and Saudi Arabia were unable to host the series, Imola dropped off the calendar (though it could come back as part of the Middle East-led adjustments) and the Japanese Grand Prix shifted to Q1 in March.
Reporting such diminished financials is unfortunate, but it’s also not cause for major concern given the extenuating circumstances. With Malaysia sneaking onto the calendar in Bahrain’s place and others possibly joining at the end of the season, F1 could get back into the 22-or-23-race range by year’s end. That would mitigate the impact of these initial race losses.
F1 could also see more revenue in the future - not from an expanded Grand Prix calendar on Sunday, but from the addition of additional sprints as soon as next year.
But for now, the financials aren’t looking as stellar as they have in recent years. Consider this one of the most tangible signs of the impact from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Last year’s trip to Iowa Speedway saw William Byron earn his second win of the year and rise into the points lead. In the year since, Byron has secured only one other win and struggled through a disappointing 2026 season.
Once poised to be among the top drivers to benefit from the return of the Chase format, Byron now finds himself 12th in points and totally removed from championship discussions. One has to wonder when the No. 24 team will turn things around.
