  • He followed it up with a pole run that showed promise for Sunday. But in the end, an untimely safety car and complete strategy gaffe from McLaren opened the door for Max Verstappen to steal the Qatar Grand Prix. Piastri followed in second, with Norris salvaging fourth after sneaking past Andrea Kimi Antonelli when the Mercedes rookie made a late mistake.   • The cumulative weekend result means Norris will head into next weekend’s Abu Dhabi finale with just 12 points separating him from Verstappen and Piastri only 16 points back in third. From rain to potential race manipulation and a controversial crash, it was a wild final weekend for the first edition of the Grand Finals, Supercars’ new playoff format. The system pitted four drivers against each other, but in the end the battle came down to the dominant Broc Feeney and the surging Chaz Mostert.
Mostert made early gains, coming home second in a Brodie Kostecki-led opener that saw drivers challenged in the rain. But Feeney bounced back with a Saturday victory and secured the pole for the finale to give himself a clear heading into Sunday’s finale. Mostert mitigated the damage with a runner-up run aided by a questionable swap with “fuel saving” teammate Ryan Wood, but needed big help to steal the title. (James Pavey / Supercars.com (x2))
n a shocking twist, that help came early and often on Sunday afternoon. Feeney was controversially caught up in an opening lap crash with - who else - Wood, sending him to the back of the field.
Feeney tried to march back from there, but was hampered by a slow pit stop and ultimately knocked out of contention by motor issues that relegated him to a season-worst finish of 20th. Matt Payne dominated the race and Mostert secured the title in second. Feeney won 13 times and scored 17 poles along the way in a dominant campaign, but suffered his worst race when it counted most. Each of the three F1 title contenders has seven wins on the year, which means any potential tiebreaker is likely to come down to most runner-up finishes. Should that happen, Lando Norris has eight to Max Verstappen’s five and Oscar Piastri’s four.
