Race Recaps
NASCAR
Cup Series: It’s a busy time for Denny Hamlin, with a newborn child at home and a controversial lawsuit playing out off-track. But the veteran’s still locked in on race day. Hamlin’s No. 11 team played the strategy game right and Hamlin drove off late to lead a Joe Gibbs Racing 1-2 at World Wide Technology Raceway. (Reid Spencer / NASCAR.com)
Xfinity Series: The good times are rolling right on to the playoffs for Connor Zilisch and JR Motorsports. Zilisch rose to the front and kept hopeful win-and-in drivers William Sawalich and Christian Eckes at bay over the final laps to end the regular season with another win. (Reid Spencer / NASCAR.com)

Formula 1
F1: Despite entering as an underdog to McLaren, the Italian Grand Prix proved to be a routine stroll up front for Max Verstappen. The four-time defending champ snagged the pole on Saturday and never looked back, cruising comfortably enough to listen and chuckle when the title-contending McLaren teammates had to undergo an awkward position swap behind him. Here are the race highlights.

FIA World Endurance Championship: It was a rainy, challenging afternoon in Austin, Texas. WEC’s planned endurance race ran under yellow for an hour and was red-flagged for some time. But it finally got underway in the late afternoon, allowing Porsche Penske Motorsport’s No. 6 team to take advantage for its first win of the year. (Stephen Kilbey / Daily Sportscar)

Former NASCAR team owner Bill Davis passes away (NASCAR)
Bill Davis, a Daytona 500-winning team owner and stalwart of the NASCAR garage through the 1990a and 2000s, has passed away at the age of 74.
NASCAR announced Davis’ passing in a Sunday afternoon statement. It read:
A championship-winning leader and owner, Bill Davis made a lasting mark on our sport through his passion and unwavering belief in the people around him. His teams celebrated some of NASCAR’s most prestigious victories, including the Daytona 500 and the Southern 500.
Bill was more than a competitor — he was a friend to all in the garage, respected for his kindness, generosity, and genuine love for racing.
NASCAR extends its deepest condolences to his wife and business partner Gail, the Davis family, and Bill's many friends during this difficult time.
Davis arrived in the NASCAR garage as a team owner in what was is now the Xfinity Series in 1988, with Mark Martin driving part-time for the group. His team notably fielded future superstar Jeff Gordon full-time for two years in the series from 1991 through 1992.
Bill Davis Racing rose up to the Cup Series in 1993, giving future champion Bobby Labonte his first full-time ride in the series. But despite the champions among the mix, it was Ward Burton that lifted the program to its biggest heights. The Virginian scored all five of the team’s Cup wins from 1995 through 2002, including triumphs in both the Daytona 500 and Southern 500.
Davis also fielded entries in the Craftsman Truck Series, most notably claiming the 2008 championship with Johnny Benson after a tense title fight with Ron Hornaday Jr.
All told. Bill Davis Racing secured five Cup wins, 11 Xfinity Series victories and 24 wins in the Truck Series before dissolving into Triad Racing Technologies after the 2008 season.

Daniel Ricciardo announces racing retirement in open letter (F1)
A year removed from his Formula 1 exit, Daniel Ricciardo claims his racing days are done.
In an open letter shared Friday, Ricciardo claimed to be done racing - but not out of motorsports altogether. The Australian will move forward as a Global Ford Racing Ambassador, with a focus on the company’s Raptor brand. Ricciardo purchased a Raptor in 2017 and had been tied to Ford through its technical partnership with Red Bull before he departed from the team last year.
“When I decided it was time to retire, I thought long and hard about finding the most authentic way to stay connected to the world of motorsports,” Ricciardo wrote in his letter. “For me, racing was always about having fun. It made me happy and created memories that will last a lifetime.”
Ricciardo got his start in F1 back in 2011, kicking off a career that spanned 14 seasons and included eight Grand Prix victories before he was ousted in favor of Liam Lawson at Racing Bulls late in the 2024 season. He became a fan-favorite during his tenure with Red Bull Racing, known for his authentic, energetic personality - captured on the burgeoning “Drive to Survive” Netflix docuseries - along with memorable moments like his shoey podium celebrations and a belly flop into a Monaco pool.
At just 36 years old, Ricciardo could still have years of competition ahead of him if he wanted to compete. But for the time being, it looks like the Perth native is content with an early exit from auto racing.

Haas Factory Team shifting from Ford to Chevy in 2026 (NASCAR)
Haas Factory Team (HFT) isn’t going away next year, but the organization will change manufacturers heading into its second year of competition.
The program announced Friday morning that it will shift its Cup and Xfinity Series programs from Ford to Chevrolet in 2026, entering an alliance with Hendrick Motorsports that will see it compete with Hendrick-built engines in both tours.
“First and foremost, we want to thank Ford for its partnership,” team president Joe Custer said in a press release. “Their support allowed us to establish Haas Factory Team and we remain dedicated to delivering results for them in Cup and Xfinity all the way through the season finale in Phoenix.”
There are currently three full-time teams under the HFT umbrella. Cole Custer is the company’s lone Cup driver, with Sheldon Creed and Sam Mayer competing in Xfinity. The trio will all return next year.
Mayer became the new-look group’s first winner in August, taking a victory at Iowa Speedway. Both he and Creed are among the 12 contenders in the Xfinity Series playoffs. Custer sits 33rd in the Cup Series standings amid a challenging year for the No. 41 team.
HFT emerged from the closure of the former Stewart-Haas Racing, with the closing company’s other charters sold to 23XI Racing, Front Row Motorsports and Trackhouse Racing. The two charters sold to 23XI and FRM are currently tied up in the teams’ ongoing antitrust lawsuit with NASCAR.

Number of the Day: 343
Bubba Wallace led 73 laps in Sunday’s Enjoy Illinois 300, coming up just two laps behind team owner Denny Hamlin for the most laps led in the race. In doing so, he pushed his season-long total to 343, topping 2023’s 285 laps for the most he’s led in a single season.

How F1 Drivers Actually Earn Their License To Race
You can't get an F1 license at your local DMV. There are lots of boxes that need to be checked, which can take years. Oh, and a pile of money, too.

In a story that’s a largely a footnote, Max Verstappen casually set the fastest lap in F1 history on Saturday. (Andrew Benson / BBC)

The majority of the discourse you’ll see this week will revolve around the Lando Norris-Oscar Piastri swap that benefitted Norris. I recommend this piece sharing opinions from The Race’s staff for a taste of what you’ll see around the F1 media landscape.

McLaren’s Andrea Stella defended the move, which followed a slow stop for Norris, saying “the fact that we went first with Oscar, compounded by the slow pitstop of Lando, then led to a swap of positions, and we thought it was absolutely the right thing to go back to the situation pre-existing the pitstop and then let the guys race.” (Ben Anderson & Edd Straw / The Race)

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff feels the swap decision will be a “very difficult precedent to undo,” asking what will happen “if the team does another mistake and it’s not a pitstop.” (Filip Cleeren / Motorsport)

Outside of the title fight, Haas’ Oliver Bearman is now two penalty points away from a race ban after being deemed at fault for a collision with Carlos Sainz in Monza. (Josh Suttill / The Race)

Both Alexander Dunne and Sami Meguetounif were handed post-race penalties after the F2 sprint. (FIAFormula2.com)

Arvid Lindblad met the same fate leaving the feature race, with a 10-second penalty given an additional five-place grid penalty for the next race. (FIAFormula2.com)

Tramnitz wasn’t the only one penalized after Saturday’s F3 sprint. Noel Leon and Rafael Camara suffered the same fate for mistakes made during the race. (FIAFormula3.com)

Turns out the V8s are staying in the past. Mohammed Ben Sulayem made an attempt to bring the motors back for 2029, but appears to be shutting that down amid pushback from manufacturers. (Andrew Benson / BBC)

Pierre Gasly is staying put at Alpine through 2028, having signed a new contract extension with the team. (Oleg Karpov / Motorsport)

Isack Hadjar has impressed in recent races, most notably last week’s podium. But Red Bull has ruled out a driver swap with Yuki Tsunoda at Red Bull for the year. (Ben Vinel / Motorsport)
