WEC alters schedule as Middle East conflicts continue (Sports Cars)
With conflicts on the Middle East continuing to cause trouble for racing tours around the world, the FIA World Endurance Championship is shifting its schedule for the second time in 2026.
Series officials confirmed over the weekend plans to move planned races in Qatar and Bahrain for trips to Barcelona and Monza, pending ratification from the next FIA World Motor Sport Council meeting. The decision follows months of planning that began with the initial postponement of the season-opening Qatar 1812KM.
The actual date shifts associated with these moves are minimal. WEC would venture to Barcelona on Oct. 18, one week earlier than planned for Qatar, before ending in Monza on the same date (Nov. 7) initially planned for Bahrain. But there are differences in the races themselves - namely, a shortening to six hours apiece from the planned eight and 10-hour lengths of the prior events due to season and circuit factors. That means the races will award 13 points fewer apiece for their winners, leaving fewer points on the table late in the year.
Unfortunately, the one-week change for Barcelona also creates one significant conflict. GT World Challenge Europe is expected to close out its 2026 season at Portimao on the same weekend, a move that could leave various teams and upward of 19-20 drivers affected and forced to choose between races, though SRO Motorsports Group could shift the GT World Challenge race to Saturday in an effort to let drivers run them both.
WEC isn’t the only series working through major schedule challenges as the Middle Eastern conflicts rage on. The Asian Le Mans Series has been planning for four races between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, but could have to look elsewhere come this winter.

The championship was originally expected to feature four races (two double-header weekends in Dubai and Abu Dhabi) in the United Arab Emirates, so multiple alternatives have had to be developed.
Among them, DSC understands, is a calendar that would begin with a European event in December, then move to Sepang in Malaysia and Buriram in Thailand after the New Year.
With the Asian Le Mans Series preparing to introduce the Hypercar class alongside the new Asian Le Mans Cup support series, organisers face the additional challenge of finalising a calendar that works for teams planning to contest the expanded championship.
With the conflicts seemingly nowhere near a concrete conclusion, these logistical woes could linger into the late portion of the year and potentially even 2027.

United States President Donald J. Trump hosted Penske, defending champion Alex Palou, Indianapolis 500 winner Felix Rosenqvist and runner-up David Malukas at the White House for a “Freedom 250 Grand Prix Showcase” previewing the upcoming race weekend on Aug. 22 and 23.
Trump was given a ceremonial racing helmet before discussing the race, which will feature a seven-turn, 1.66-mile temporary street circuit in the nation’s capital as part of the country’s 250th-anniversary celebration.
“If you think about it, as we count down to the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, this will be like no other race ever,” Trump said, adding that “it’ll be one of the most unforgettable racing events the world has ever seen.”
“We think about the Indy 500 as an iconic race,” Penske said. “But this is going to move right up there next to it, as far as we’re concerned, from the standpoint of the best in the world.”
Others in attendance for the event included Penske Corporation President Bud Denker, FOX Sports CEO Eric Shanks, General Motorsports President Mark Reuss and U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Sean Duffy.
