Charlotte Motor Speedway reportedly abandons the Roval (NASCAR Cup)
Back in 2018, Charlotte Motor Speedway gambled and shifted its fall NASCAR weekend to the track’s Roval course - a move that made the playoff event exciting and unique amid the greater schedule.
But times change. And according to The Athletic’s Jordan Bianchi, so have the track’s plans for 2026.
Bianchi reported Monday that NASCAR’s home track plans to shift its 2026 postseason race back to the oval, leaving both its NASCAR race weekends as oval events. The Cup Series, O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and Craftsman Truck Series will all make the change, with an announcement planned for the coming weeks.
Charlotte has traditionally hosted two Cup races since its arrival in 1960, including the iconic Coca-Cola 600 in May and a fall date that fell into every iteration of the Cup Series playoffs after they arrived in 2004. For years there were no issues with those dates, but in the 2010s the oval sometimes struggled to provide excitement.
Enter the Roval. Speedway Motorsports upgraded its road course and began holding a playoff race on the circuit in 2018, a successful shift that ultimately kicked off a period of change that spruced up a stale schedule for the sport over the past decade.
The weekend was largely successful as a unique event during the playoff slate for years, but the arrival of the Next Gen car flipped the sport’s paradigm on its head in 2022. Since the arrival of the car, which brought significant changes from prior generations, Charlotte’s oval weekend has become one of the must-see races on the year, while the Roval has struggled at times to provide the expected intensity and unpredictability.
The novelty has worn off - a trend that would only be exacerbated by the shift to the Chase and removal of stakes tied to playoff elimination this year - and the oval’s provided more compelling racing. So Charlotte is reversing course and shifting back to an all-oval schedule for 2026.
This move is likely to be received favorably by many NASCAR fans, most notably those fatigued by the uptick of road courses on modern schedules. But the decision comes with one notable repercussion. The elimination of the Roval means the entirety of NASCAR’s Chase format will take place without a single road course race.
(Source(s): Jordan Bianchi / The Athletic)
An additional relevant take: The Athletic’s Jeff Gluck wrote about his colleagues news scoop, saying NASCAR has continued a streak of favorable moves by leaving the Roval behind.

F1 kicks off quiet preseason testing in Barcelona (F1)
Under the veil of secrecy - relative secrecy, anyhow - the stars and cars of Formula 1 returned to action for the first preseason test of the tour’s new era to kick off the week.
Seven of the 11 teams competing this year took to Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya Monday for the opening day of the shakedown test. The testing, which is falling earlier this year, has provided a logistical challenge for teams still grinding away on the construction of their 2026 cars. Teams are free to run on any three of the five weekdays this week. Williams is opting to skip it, while Ferrari, McLaren and Aston Martin planned to run later in the week.
The session is closed to media and fans, save for a small F1 broadcast crew, but RACER’s Chris Medland confirmed that Isack Hadjar was quickest on the opening day, setting the pace in one of his first appearances for Red Bull Racing. Hadjar reportedly completed a lap of 1:58.159s in one of his 107 laps, beating out George Russell’s 1:58.696s for Mercedes.
Nine total drivers completed laps on the day, with Esteban Ocon contesting a session-high 154 laps for Haas. Both Russell and Kimi Antonelli ran laps for Mercedes, with newcomer Cadillac also electing to field both Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez.
There were three red flags for stoppages on the day. Audi suffered an early end, dropping out after 27 laps with a technical issue. Cadillac completed just 44 laps, with a priority on debugging issues.
Teams were free to return to the track for another day of running on Tuesday, but adverse weather conditions provided a different challenge. That led to just two organizations electing to make laps, with Ferrari joining the fray while Red Bull returned.
Both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton completed laps in the Prancing Horse’s first day of running, while Max Verstappen and Hadjar were each on hand for Red Bull. The Ferrari pair combined to complete 120 laps, with Red Bull’s duo rolling through 78 circuits before a Hadjar shunt brought an early end to its day.

UK Charity Commission launches inquiry into FIA Foundation (F1)
Former Nato secretary general George Robertson, a former chair of the FIA Foundation, recently raised concerns to the commission about FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem becoming chairman of the foundation. That led the commission, which regulates charities in England and Wales, to issue a temporary protective order preventing the FIA foundation from “entering into certain transactions without the prior written approval of the Commission.”
“The FIA Foundation is a remarkable organization with a huge reach into the world of saving lives on roads. And its strength is based on its independence from the FIA itself,” Robertson told BBC Sport. “So if the independence is being compromised, as it seems, then this will affect the efficiency and the effectiveness of a highly valuable road safety actor internationally.”
The primary purpose of the FIA Foundation is to help fund road safety projects around the world. It was founded by former FIA president Max Mosley and controls about 500m euros ($599.09m dollars). Ben Sulayem was appointed chair of the foundation after former chair David Richards was removed last October.
More context from the BBC:
Under UK law, a charity must operate independently and solely to further its charitable purposes, and not be controlled by external organisations or interests.
The Charities Act 2011 says trustees must be free from undue influence of conflicts of interest from outside parties.
The Charity Commission said its inquiry would examine the relationship between the FIA Foundation and the FIA, external, “and whether any conflicts of interest have been appropriately identified and managed, with specific reference to grants awarded by the charity”.
In addition, the commission will investigate to determine if “any of the charity’s property has been or is at risk and to take action to protect such property.”
The scope of the inquiry could be extended if additional regulatory issues are found.

Number of the Day: 7.8
If this is the end for the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval, then few are likely to miss it come time for the Chase more than… Well… Chase.
Chase Elliott was the Roval’s biggest star, notching two wins and six top-10s in eight Roval races with an average finish of 7.8. Kyle Larson matched Elliott in wins and led more laps, but didn’t have the consistency. In fact, only one other driver managed six top-10s during the road course’s era.
The name might surprise you: Joey Logano. He was rarely a frontrunner, but the Team Penske star’s consistency on the Roval was one of the hidden strengths that helped propel him to three championship runs during the track’s era.
