Practice and qualifying are complete for the Cook Out Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium.
Practice consisted of two 8 minutes sessions for drivers.
A final practice session served as qualifying.
Qualifying locked the top 20 drivers into the feature event tonight. The rest of the drivers move to the Last Chance race. They start the race in the order they qualified.
The top 10 starters for the Clash: #5-Kyle Larson, #24-William Byron, #54-Ty Gibbs, #19-Chase Briscoe, #20-Christopher Bell, #11-Denny Hamlin, #23-Bubba Wallace, #17-Chris Buescher, #1-Ross Chastain, and #45-Tyler Reddick.
The top 10 starters for the Last Chance Race: #21-Josh Berry, #71-Michael McDowell, #2-Austin Cindric, #6-Corey LaJoie, #48-Alex Bowman, #35-Riley Herbst, #51-Cody Ware, #16-A.J. Allmendinger, #41-Cole Custer, #42-John Hunter Nemechek.
The top two finishers in the Last Chance race will advance to the Clash.
The final spot in the race goes to the driver highest in the 2025 points not already in the race. That will be #48-Alex Bowman if he doesn’t race his way in.

IndyCar, White House announce plans for D.C. street race (IndyCar)
With an assist from the Oval Office, the NTT IndyCar Series has added a 17th race to its 2026 schedule.
Formalized by the signing of an executive order by President Donald J. Trump, IndyCar announced last week that a new street race will be coming to Washington, D.C. and the National Mall on Aug. 21-23. The race will be referred to as the Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, D.C. It will be the first-ever motor race on the National Mall and city streets, held to celebrate America’s 250th birthday.
“IndyCar racing is a source of pride and entertainment for our Nation, which is why I am pleased to announce the Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington,” President Trump declared in the executive order. “This race, the first motor race ever to be held in our Nation’s capital near the National Mall, will showcase the majesty of our great city as drivers navigate a track around our iconic national monuments in celebration of America’s 250th birthday.
“For over one hundred years, American IndyCar racing has set the pace for motorsports. With speeds topping over 200 miles per hour, the cars and drivers inspire awe and respect in all who watch this quintessentially American sport.”
Penske Entertainment will administer the race, as it does yearly for Detroit, Long Beach and at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. IndyCar announced Tuesday that it’s partnered with Monumental Sports & Entertainment to promote the event.
“President Trump has bestowed an incredible distinction upon our sport, and we’re grateful for his trust and support as IndyCar prepares to honor our country with a tremendous racing spectacle,” series owner Roger Penske said. “This will be a truly memorable event that celebrates our country’s independence and the legacy of patriotism, innovation, and excellence that powers motorsports across America.”
The event will be a complete, points-paying race on the 2026 calendar, with plans to make the race “free to the general public” with “vantage points of several majestic symbols of national pride and unity.”
It will be the 14th race of the season, slotting between races in Ontario and Milwaukee.
With just over six months to prepare, the race will be an immense logistical challenge for all involved with organizing it. Similar street races in other cities often take one or more years to plan and execute. With proper execution, it could become a case study for prospective street course events to learn from.

Dario Franchitti making one-off NASCAR return in St. Pete (NASCAR Trucks)
Weeks after confirming his return to professional racing, former NTT IndyCar Series star Dario Franchitti has announced a one-off return to NASCAR.
The four-time IndyCar champion was announced for a one-off run with Tricon Garage at St. Petersburg, a venue hosting NASCAR’s Craftsman Truck Series in a companion weekend with IndyCar put together by FOX Sports, which will air both races. It will be a surprising return for Franchitti, who left IndyCar for a single NASCAR season in 2008 before returning to the open wheel tour in 2009.
RACER’s Marshall Pruett reported that Franchitti’s ride came with an assist from Legacy Motor Club co-owner Jimmie Johnson. Both teams field Toyota machinery.
“I got the opportunity from literally a conversation with Jimmie,” Franchitti told RACER. “I said I thought it would be fun, I thought it’d be interesting to push myself again, to test myself, to do the to the whole process of trying to be competitive again. Since I stopped, I still do a lot in historic stuff; I’ve gotten to drive some really cool cars against some pretty good drivers. I guess this is more of the same. It’s just a modern truck.”
Franchitti’s return comes nearly 13 years after a violent crash in Houston that seemingly spelled the end of his professional career. The 52-year-old has generally only competed in historic cars since while serving various roles off-track, but announced a professional return at the 24H Dubai in December.
