Testimony from Denny Hamlin leads early NASCAR trial proceedings (NASCAR Cup)
After years of negotiations, months of deliberation and a few weeks of postseason recuperation,
NASCAR’s
hotly-anticipated antitrust suit at the hands of 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsport began in earnest to kick off the month of December.
The opening day saw a jury of six men and three selected before opening arguments were presented and 23XI co-owner Denny Hamlin took the stand as the trial’s first witness. Fellow co-owner Michael Jordan’s presence stole the show, leading to a few potential
jurors being excused after admitting to being fans of the NBA great.
Jordan will be the only representative for 23XI over the run of the trial due to a decision from Judge Kenneth Bell. Hamlin was present for opening statements and remained as 23XI/FRM lawyer Jeffrey Kessler’s opening witness - a move that could let him see
the full case without concerns over hearing other testimony.
Save for some frustration from Bell and emotion from Hamlin in the beginning of his time, there were minimal noteworthy moments from the opening day.
But
Hamlin’s testimony on Day 2 turned fiery, showcasing the NASCAR veteran’s frustration with his sanctioning body.
During more than three hours of testimony, Hamlin went to bat with NASCAR attorney Lawrence Buterman. The Virginian discussed his concerns over the 2025 charter agreement, rejected notions of NASCAR doing enough for its teams and noted that his team is “one
sponsor away” from losing its’ 2.26 percent profit margin.
Buterman did what he could to establish Hamlin as an untrustworthy narrator, pointing out a pitch deck he’d shown Jordan favoring NASCAR’s financial model, showcasing favorable words about the Next Gen he’d uttered on Kenny Wallace’s podcast in 2024 and noting
his lofty $14 million salary while implying he’s a bad businessman. Hamlin noted the pressure to put out positive messages publicly and implied that he’s paid well because he wins races.
Looking on the team side, Buterman noted attempts to “lock up” drivers like Corey Heim under contracts while complaining about NASCAR “locking up” tracks, along with noting that 23XI drivers make a smaller percentage than what NASCAR pays teams. Hamlin responded
by noting that 23XI isn’t a monopoly and drivers have options.
Afternoon testimony from NASCAR Executive Vice President Scott Prime followed, with NASCAR’s concerns over a LIV Golf-type breakaway and texts showing frustration from NASCAR leadership during negotiations brought up. His testimony will continue today.

Red Bull elevates Hadjar, sidelines Tsunoda for 2026 (F1)
After a tumultuous 2025 campaign that saw an early driver swap that ultimately proved fruitless,

Bull Racing is switching up its driver lineups again for the 2026 Formula 1 season.
The company announced Tuesday that Isack Hadjar will step up to the primary Red Bull team in 2026, pairing with four-time champion Max Verstappen. His promotion will come at the expense of Yuki Tsunoda, who will shift back to a reserve driver role.
Tsunoda’s Red Bull rise came in the third race of the 2025 campaign, after Liam Lawson gave the team concern in his opening two Grand Prix appearances. But he’s struggled in the role, while Hadjar has outperformed Lawson within the sister Racing Bulls team.
The rookie currently sits 10th in the championship standings with 51 points, ahead of both Lawson (38) and Tsunoda (33), making him the obvious candidate for a spot alongside Verstappen.
“I’m so grateful to Oracle Red Bull Racing for giving me the opportunity and trust to race at the highest level of Formula 1,” Hadjar said in a team release. “After all the hard work I have put in since joining the junior team, it’s such a great reward. I’ve
had many ups and downs throughout my career, and they kept believing and pushing me.
“This year with Visa Cash App Racing Bulls has been absolutely amazing, I’ve learnt a lot and secured a maiden podium. I feel I’m much better as a racing driver and a person, due to the team‘s support and preparation.
“I feel ready to go to Oracle Red Bull Racing and I am happy and proud they feel the same. It’s an awesome move, to work with the best and learn from Max is something I can’t wait for.”
With Hadjar moving up and Tsunoda stepping aside, Red Bull Junior Arvid Lindblad will step into the vacant Racing Bulls seat alongside a returning Lawson. Lindblad is just 18 years old with minimal single-seater experience, but sits sixth in the Formula 2 standings
with one Sprint win (Saudi Arabia) and one feature win (Barcelona) to his name.
“I’d like to thank everyone at VCARB for the opportunity,” Lindblad said. “Since I started this journey at five years old, it was always my goal to be in Formula 1 so it’s a proud moment to take this step.
“I’m extremely grateful to the Red Bull Junior Program and my personal team for their guidance, mentorship and belief; none of this would have been possible without their support. 2026 will be a big challenge and I know there’s a lot to learn, but I’m ready
to work closely with the team and rise to it. I can’t wait to get started, it’s going to be an exciting year!”
