Middle Eastern tensions put various races in jeopardy (FIA WEC/MotoGP/F1)
The rising tensions and battle in the Middle East are quickly having an effect on various schedules from worldwide racing tours.
The United States and Israel launched a coordinated attack on Iran during the final day of February, killing leader Ali Khamenei among other officials. Iran and its allies have since retaliated with several strikes to both Israel and various U.S. military bases in the area.
With the conflict ongoing, WEC officials felt it was impossible to guarantee the safety of Qatar’s Losail International Circuit.
“FIA WEC management has been in constant dialogue with the Qatar Motor & Motorcycle Federation (QMMF) in light of the current and evolving geopolitical situation in the Middle East,” an official WEC release read. “With the safety and security of competitors, personnel and fans of the utmost importance, the decision has been taken to delay the event that had been due to take place on 26-28 March.
“Following further discussions with our colleagues at Losail International Circuit (LIC), where the race is held, a new date for the Qatar 1812km during the second half of the campaign will be finalized and communicated in due course.”
While WEC is the first to make a change, it may not be the last. MotoGP is scheduled to hold its Qatar Grand Prix on April 12, but series CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta acknowledged Wednesday that holding the event will be a challenge, while also ruling out any consideration of a replacement venue.
“Is there a possibility of racing at another date? Don’t worry. We always have a plan B,” Ezpeleta said at an Estrella Galicia event. “We have to wait — I can’t say right now that we’re not going. We’ve been in talks with Qatar since what happened on Sunday, and we’ll make a decision. It’s difficult for us to go to Qatar on April 12, but I cannot say that we won’t go.
“Going somewhere else? Certainly not. Fitting it into the calendar later on? We’re very good at making calendars. We’ll know something soon, obviously. We’re waiting to hear from them. There’s still time.”
The conflict also raised concerns over Formula 1’s season-opening Australian Grand Prix, a race weekend that’s already underway as this newsletter goes out. But while many had to rearrange flights, event organizers expressed confidence that the race will be completed without significant impacts.
“The last 48 hours have required some reshuffling of flights,” Australian F1 leader Travis Auld said. “That is largely Formula 1’s responsibility. They take charge of the teams, drivers and all the personnel that are required here to make this event happen. There’s quite a number of them.
“My understanding is that’s all now been locked in, everyone will be here ready for the race and fans won’t notice any difference.”
F1’s scheduling concerns could arise in April, with trips to Bahrain and Saudi Arabia expected in back-to-back weeks.

Cleetus McFarland signs two-year O’Reilly deal for part-time run with RCR (NASCAR O’Reilly)
YouTuber-turned-NASCAR hopeful Garrett Mitchell - known as Cleetus McFarland - is making another step up NASCAR competition next month at Rockingham Raceway.
Richard Childress Racing announced Wednesday that Mitchell will make his NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series debut for the team in April’s trip to Rockingham, driving the team’s No. 33 Chevrolet. He’ll run with sponsor support from Tommy’s Express.
The YouTube sensation shared on Facebook that it’ll be the first of three races apiece he plans to run in both this season and 2027, with additional planned starts at Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway.
“To have the opportunity to make my NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series debut with a legendary race team like Richard Childress Racing is a dream come true,” Mitchell said in a statement. “It’s a huge honor, and I am incredibly grateful to learn under the leadership of Richard Childress, Mike Verlander, Danny Lawrence and everyone in Welcome, North Carolina.
“Having Tommy’s Express on board for my debut makes it even more special. They’re a fast-forward brand that understands speed, performance, and connecting with people, which lines up perfectly with everything we are trying to accomplish.”
Mitchell is one of the automotive space’s biggest names on YouTube, with 4.65 million subscribers on the platform. He’s leveraged that fame and financial backing to chase his dreams in NASCAR, having made four ARCA Menards Series appearances in 2025.
The 30-year-old made his Craftsman Truck Series debut at Daytona in February, but crashed on his own at the exit of Turn 4 in the opening laps. He went on to finish 11th in the ensuing day’s ARCA opener, but still incited controversy given his inexperience and early crash.
That chatter is likely to continue into Mitchell’s Rockingham run. It’ll be a rare non-superspeedway start for the YouTuber - a good opportunity to improve his race craft, done at the behest of NASCAR to gain approval for a Talladega run. But it will come with another step up in series at one of NASCAR’s most challenging tracks.
Mitchell is aware of the controversy and discussed plans to try to gain experience and work on his craft in an appearance on Dirty Mo Media’s “Dale Jr Download” this week - albeit with an acknowledgement that he’d take advantage of a major opportunity if it arose.
“I don’t want to drive a Cup car right now,” Mitchell said. “But brother, if someone calls me and says, ‘We got a spot in a Cup car in the Daytona 500.’ I mean, what am I supposed to do?”

Vibration risks leave Aston Martin preparing for limited running in Australia (F1)
Most Formula 1 teams arrive to the season-opening weekend with confidence and hope for the year ahead. But for fans of Aston Martin, the 2026 campaign is beginning with their tails tucked between their legs.
In a disastrous admission that spells trouble to kick off F1’s new era, Aston Martin team principal Adrian New confirmed Thursday that the team will likely run limited laps through the Australian Grand Prix due to a severe vibration in its chassis.
Newey acknowledged that veteran star Fernando Alonso, 44, doesn’t believe he can do more than 25 laps before he’ll “risk permanent nerve damage to his hands” after dealing with numbness during preseason testing. Alonso’s younger teammate, the 27-year-old Lance Stroll, can allegedly only complete 15 laps before facing a similar risk.
Aston Martin was already put on the backfoot going into the season, with a condensed development period after Newey arrived late due to required gardening leave after his exit from Red Bull. The company suffered significant engine challenges during preseason testing and completed just six laps on the final day of action.
Newey still feels the car may have “tremendous development potential” and says Aston has “quite an aggressive development plan underway,” but the dramatic vibrations have led to damaged battery-related components and risk of auxiliary pieces like mirrors and tail lights falling off.
So the team is going to play things by ear, but F1 fans might not see much of their familiar green cars on-track this weekend in Australia.

Number of the Day: 6.0
Fortune favorites the fast qualifiers when the NTT IndyCar Series ventures to Phoenix Raceway - but not necessarily the fastest. After front row qualifiers won six of the tour’s first nine races at the facility, the past four trips to Phoenix have been won from an average starting position of 6.0. And that’s been with little variation - two wins from sixths and a win apiece from fifth and seventh.
Now, the latest of those races came in 2018, so take that with a grain of salt. But it’s worth keeping an eye on drivers qualifying right around the end of the top-five.
