Denny Hamlin to race injured after re-aggravating surgically-repaired shoulder (NASCAR Cup)
Denny Hamlin’s chaotic offseason has provided one more unfortunate twist heading into the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season.
The 45-year-old revealed Wednesday that he reinjured the surgically-repaired right shoulder that impacted his 2024 season over the winter months. And given the risk of lost time - with potential for upward of four months out of the car - he’s planning to tough it out and race through the injury this season.
Hamlin’s injury occurred while he was going through the rubble of his parents’ house in Stanley, N.C. A December fire burned the house to the ground, killing Hamlin’s terminally ill father, Dennis, and critically injuring his mother, Mary Lou.
“I don’t think it ever healed properly,” Hamlin said of his shoulder. “Just noticed some issues right after the season. It just was nagging me a little bit. Took a little fall at my mom’s house, going through all the rubble, and it just didn’t feel right (after that).”
The fire was the most tragic moment of a rollercoaster few months for the Virginian, who lost the Cup Series title in late, heartbreaking fashion in November before earning a major court win in a favorable December settlement between NASCAR and two teams including 23XI Racing, which Hamlin co-owns.
That collectively left Hamlin in a different mental space, admittedly wishing he had more time off while many others in the field were ready to get back to action. It’s hard to forecast where 2026 will lead the veteran.
“Certainly this season for me could go one of two ways, and there’s not much of a middle road there,” he said to assembled media at Bowman Gray Stadium. “It’s up to me which way I decide to turn. So right now my focus is to keep this thing on the right track and making sure I spend these last couple years accomplishing everything I want to before my career is over.”

Carson Hocevar re-ups with Spire in long-term deal (NASCAR Cup)
Spire Motorsports has what it believes could be a future superstar in Carson Hocevar. So going into what could be an eventful silly season, the company has made a point to lock the Michigander up for the future.
The team announced Thursday that Hocevar has a signed a long-term contract extension that’ll see him race with Spire into the 2030s. He’ll also make 13 starts for Spire in the Craftsman Truck Series this year.
“It’s a pretty big moment for our company to announce an extension with Carson (Hocevar) that takes us out for multiple years,” team co-owner Jeff Dickerson said in a team release. “It’s not just about knowing he’ll be here with us for the long-haul, but it gives our sponsors and competition group the foresight to make their own plans knowing he’s in the seat of the No. 77 as far as we can see.”
Hocevar arrived at the Cup Series program after a 2023 Championship 4 appearance in the Truck Series. The 23-year-old has since emerged as perhaps Spire’s best driver, earning three top-fives and 15 top-10s in 81 Cup appearances. He was the 2024 Rookie of the Year and came close to a breakthrough win last spring at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
“I love to race and there’s really no place better to race than here,” Hocevar said. “This shows we’re all committed and eager to race with each other for a long time,” continued Hocevar. “I think of Jeff (Dickerson) as a father figure, but the same could be said for Luke (Lambert, crew chief), Tyler (Green, spotter), Bill (Anthony, Spire Motorsports’ president) and all the No. 77 guys.
“Everyone in the building, has really become a family to me. Spire is such a different team now compared to how it was my rookie season, and especially when I made my debut in 2023. It’s fun to know I’m going to be around the Cup garage for a long time, and really a dream come true.”

Cup Series: After heavy weekend snow and a three-day wait, the NASCAR Cup Series finally ventured up the road to Bowman Gray Stadium for the year-opening Cook Out Clash on Wednesday night.
What followed was a night of chaos - in both new and predictable ways.
The day of racing around the track known as The Madhouse lived up to the track’s name. There was heavy contact and a controversial penalty during the last chance qualifier. When the 200-lap feature finally arrived, it brought cautions for ‘weepers’ that were really caused by melting snow behind the SAFER barrier, a brief delay due to a storm dropping a wintry mix on the track and a crash-filled battle on wet tires that saw drivers running out of fuel as the race was stalled repeatedly and shifted from FOX to FS2 for - let me check my notes here - The Masked Singer?
But when it counted, the race supplied a meaningful run to the finish on an evolving wet-to-dry track. And when the checkered flag flew, it also supplied a new winner.
It wasn’t a points win that’ll count in the record books, but it didn’t make a difference to an emotional Preece afterward.

Ryan Preece became the third on Wednesday. He joins Jeff Gordon (1994) and Denny Hamlin (2006) as drivers to accomplish the feat. Now we’ll see if he can continue the trend they each established and follow it up with multiple points-paying wins in the season to come.
