Denny Hamlin’s father dies, mother remains hospitalized after Sunday house fire (NASCAR Cup)
First responders reported to a Gaston County home at 6:27 p.m. ET, where authorities said they found two people outside the home with life-threatening injuries. Officials from the Gaston County Office of Emergency Management and Fire Services provided an official update Monday evening, where they confirmed that Dennis Hamlin, 75, had succumbed to his injuries.
Mary Lou Hamlin, 69, was listed in critical condition and transferred to a Winston-Salem’s Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Burn Center for treatment.
The home was built in 2015 and owned by Denny Hamlin’s real estate company. Due to the extent of the fire and resulting structural collapse, an investigation into the cause of the blaze is ongoing.
Dennis Hamlin had been terminally ill and was unable to travel to Phoenix Raceway to see his son compete for the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series title in November. An emotional Hamlin credited his father as “the one that got me into racing” after an October win at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
“He just took me to a racetrack when I was 5 (and) then made all the sacrifices financially to keep me going,” he added. “Sold everything they had. We almost lost our house a couple times, just tried to keep it all going.”
Hamlin’s parents were the driving force behind his early rise, keeping him afloat amid great sacrifice while working in Virginia. The three-time Daytona 500 winner finally caught his break while shaking down cars for the late J.D. Gibbs, son of Joe Gibbs, leading to a 2004 O’Reilly Auto Parts Series debut and a step up to the Cup Series in late 2005.
In the two decades since, Hamlin has emerged as a perennial contender and one of the modern era’s biggest stars. The 45-year-old has notched 60 Cup wins, tying him for 10th on the tour’s all-time wins list. His parents have been there every step of the way.
Sunday’s fire continues a difficult offseason for both Hamlin and the NASCAR family as a whole.
23XI Racing, the team Hamlin co-owns with Michael Jordan, ended a tenuous antitrust lawsuit with the sanctioning body alongside Front Row Motorsports on Dec. 11. Drivers Michael Annett and Nick Joanides passed away in the first week of the month and NASCAR Hall of Fame nominee Greg Biffle died alongside three family members and three others in a Dec. 18 plane crash.

 FBI seizes multiple MotoGP bikes from drug baron in Mexico raid (MotoGP)
“This month, Mexican authorities executed multiple search warrants and seized a large number of motorcycles with an estimated value of approximately $40 million USD believed to be owned by FBI’s Top Ten Fugitive Ryan James Wedding,” FBI Los Angeles posted on social media. “This successful seizure is a result of collaborative efforts among Mexican authorities, the FBI, RCMP (Canadian police) and LAPD.
“There is a reward up to $15 million USD for information leading to his arrest and/or conviction. If you have any information concerning Wedding, please contact the FBI.”
Wedding is a former Canadian Olympian accused of running a drug cartel and arranging for the murder of a federal witness. He’s also known as a motorcycle aficionado.
Included in his collection were MotoGP star Marc Marquez’s 2012 championship-winning Moto2 bike, a pair of bikes ridden by series legend Valentino Rossi - a title-winning 125cc Aprilia and a Ducati - along with other Ducati machines ridden by Jorge Lorenzo, Andrea Dovizioso, Loris Capirossi and Andrea Iannone.
Wedding has yet to be found and arrested. It’s uncertain what will come of the motorcycles. Authorities could conceivably have them stored, destroyed or auctioned. They’d likely fetch a high price in a sale given the motorcycle resale market and the added value of their MotoGP history.
