No decision yet as Gabehart-JGR court drama continues (NASCAR Cup)
The ongoing legal spat between Joe Gibbs Racing, Chris Gabehart and Spire Motorsports rolled on this week.
A court date was set for Thursday, but Joe Gibbs Racing kicked off the week with a Wednesday night legal filing accusing Gabehart of not being able to completely comply with the expedited discovery order issued by the Western District of North Carolina due to deleted text messages.
The organization also indicated that it could showcase a narrative that proved Gabehart used its trade secrets with Spire. From Motorsport:
In italics below is language taken directly from the Joe Gibbs Racing filing:
“That evidence reveals Gabehart did not merely take JGR’s trade secrets—he immediately operationalized them for Spire’s benefit, creating a detailed ‘Focus Plan’ referencing the very categories of misappropriated materials, replicating JGR’s proprietary analytics tools for Spire’s use, and apparently actively participating in Spire’s NASCAR race-day operations while still subject to his restrictive covenant.
“Equally troubling, Gabehart has now admitted the deletion of an unknown number of responsive text messages with Spire’s co-owner, Jeff Dickerson— communications deleted in the days immediately following his misappropriation—depriving JGR of critical evidence and warranting an adverse inference that the deleted messages would have further implicated both Defendants in the joint misappropriation of JGR’s trade secrets. In short, the cumulative record amply justifies broad injunctive relief—coupled with court-ordered monitoring—can protect JGR from the ‘threat’ of irreparable harm that continues to unfold.”
The company went on to detail the layers of its alleged betrayal from Gabehart and Spire, even including evidence from this past race weekend showing Gabehart at the track and seemingly participating in the weekend with Spire. The company also formally asked for an expedited schedule in an effort to conclude this trial before the end of the 2026 Cup season and requested the court to mandate Spire and Gabehart to explain what he’s doing in his role as Chief Motorsports Officer.
Thursday brought a lengthy day in court, but no ruling on the requested preliminary injunction JGR is seeking to prevent Gabehart from using proprietary information or working for Spire in any similar function to his JGR competition director duties.
There was a whole lot of arguing and posturing over the course of the day, with JGR noting an Excel spreadsheet Gabehart had on Jan. 28 that seemingly mirrors one JGR used. Gabehart’s representation noted that the document was one the former crew chief had made for Gibbs in the first place. Spire continues to maintain that it doesn’t use, nor want, the JGR files Gabehart at one point had.
Judge Susan C. Rodriguez of the Western District of North Carolina heard Thursday’s arguments and took 45 minutes to consider a potential ruling, but ultimately said she wanted a little more time to reflect and make an informed decision. In the meantime, the temporary restraining order preventing Gabehart from working for Spire in a similar capacity to JGR has been extended to April 9 or until the point that it’s usurped by a decision.

F1 implements energy recharge reduction for Japan GP qualifying (F1)
Formula 1’s manufacturers and FIA officials have come together for a last-second rule change in an effort to improve the qualifying product this weekend at the Japanese Grand Prix.
Following discussions and simulation work through the week, all parties have agreed to a reduced recharge limit per lap for qualifying in Japan. The threshold will be dropped from 9MJ to 8MJ.
This move comes as F1 heads to Suzuka International Circuit, a track with minimal heavy braking zones - and therefore few opportunities for significant battery recharging. This invites a significant risk for super clipping, a phenomenon in the current cars where they switch into an energy harvesting mode while full throttle, causing a reduction in speed. The process has been met with pushback from F1 industry members and a subset of fans, particularly during qualifying runs that are meant to be on the limit.
“This adjustment reflects feedback from drivers and teams, who have emphasized the importance of maintaining qualifying as a performance challenge,” an FIA statement read. “The FIA notes that the first events under the 2026 regulations have been operationally successful, and this targeted refinement is part of the normal process of optimization as the new regulatory framework is further validated in real-world conditions.
“The FIA, together with F1 teams and power unit manufacturers, continues to embrace evolutions to energy management, with further discussions scheduled in the coming weeks.”
The hope is that the energy reduction change will mitigate the need for energy recovery, with the cost being a less powerful and slower lap overall. The Race noted sources suggesting the drop could “reduce the need for super clipping by up to four seconds per lap.”
This is a small, immediate change in the face of a bigger discussion about the series’ new cars and ruleset. The battery-focused rules have been met with mixed opinions from the F1 fanbase. Qualifying has been generally disliked, but the races themselves have proved polarizing, with increased passing but a perceived inauthenticity to F1’s purest fans.

Kyffin Simpson penalized for race-ending crash in Arlington (IndyCar)
Days removed from the NTT IndyCar Series debut on the streets of Arlington, Texas, Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kyffin Simpson has been issued a penalty for his role in the race-ending crash.
The IndyCar field was in the process of a last-lap restart when Simpson turned Arrow McLaren’s Nolan Siegel in the midst of a stack up and set off an accident that also included Romain Grosjean. Moments later came the caution flag, effectively ending the race.
In the end, the penalty will mostly be symbolic. Simpson is being sent to the end of the lead lap but loses just one spot in doing so, falling from 19th to 20th. He’s jumped by Felix Rosenqvist, who himself was penalized for jumping the final restart and dropped from sixth to what is now 19th. The shift gives Rosenqvist one point at the expense of Simpson but doesn’t change either driver’s place in the standings.
Rosenqvist currently finds himself 14th in points, with Simpson three spots back in 17th after three races. They’ll each get a chance to turn their seasons around this weekend when IndyCar returns to action at Barber Motorsports Park.

Number of the Day: 3.0
After five-straight wins from starters outside of the top-10 in the preceding three years, top-five qualifiers swept the NASCAR Cup Series’ two Martinsville Speedway races last year. Denny Hamlin won from fifth in the spring and William Byron prevailed from pole in the fall.
It’ll be curious to see which trend prevails in the track’s first race weekend of 2026.
