NASCAR upping horsepower, considering other changes for 2026 (NASCAR Cup)
After years of chatter, NASCAR appears to be making steps to give traditional fans some changes to look forward to in 2026.
NASCAR President Steve O’Donnell made an appearances as this week’s guest interviewee for Dirty Mo Media’s “Dale Jr. Download” podcast. And while most plans and ambitions were discussed in broader terms, O’Donnell did confirm that more horsepower is coming to Cup cars for many races.
In a compromise, teams will have their horsepower bumped up from 670 to 750 at road courses and ovals under 1.5 miles in length. This will include 21 of 38 races and will be accomplished by using a larger tapered spacer on top of the engine’s intake manifold to improve airflow and power. A test of the higher horsepower will take place at North Wilkesboro Speedway in December.
That number is a step in the right direction, but may not yield massive changes on track. So why settle for 750 horsepower?
In a word: Cost.
“If you went beyond 750, we looked at almost 50 million costs to the industry,” O’Donnell said. “If you look at our job, it is, ‘Yeah, you want to make a call right away, but you’ve got to think about the out years.’ So, we’re looking at Dodge coming into the sport. We’re looking at other (manufacturers) coming into the sport and then our current partners.”
Given the longform aspect of the interview, O’Donnell went on to touch on a wide range of topics. Playoff changes are still likely coming, but won’t be announced until after the 2025 season. O’Donnell noted a distaste for how the current format dominates discussion, even in the season-opening Daytona 500.
The longtime NASCAR exec also indicated that NASCAR could open the door for teams to innovate more on the Next Gen car down the road. And in a general sense, O’Donnell touched on NASCAR putting a focus on retaining current fans and building stars - with a request that drivers buy into whatever altered championship format is selected moving forward.

Ben Sulayem set to run unopposed due to election quirk (F1)
As it turns out, the battle for FIA presidency may not be much of a battle at all.
On paper, Ben Sulayem is set to see three challengers attempting to stop his second term as FIA president in a Dec. 12 vote. Former chief Formula 1 steward Tim Mayer has emerged as the lead contender, with newcomers Laura Villars and Virginie Philipott entering the fray in recent weeks.
But here’s the catch: Anyone wanting to be on the ballot has to pull together what’s referred to as a presidential list by Oct. 24. Any candidate must go forward with a team of 10 other individuals, including seven vice-presidents for sport selected from a list of FIA-approved candidates and repenting a variety of regions - namely, two from Europe and one apiece from North America, South America, Asia-Pacific, Africa and the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region.
This is where the complication arises. There are 29 candidates eligible for the World Motor Sport Council. Only one comes from South America, and that person - Brazil’s Fabiana Ecclestone, wife of former F1 leader Bernie Ecclestone - is already pledged to Ben Sulayem’s team.
Candidates aren’t allowed to appear on more than one presidential list. So without another person from that region available, none of the other three contenders can secure the South American region’s support and earn a place on the ballot.
This week’s news provides an anticlimactic conclusion to what was building to be an intriguing race, albeit one likely to end with the same result. But that doesn’t mean Ben Sulayem’s rivals are entirely stepping aside.
Villars has vowed to push on with her campaign, mulling over a legal challenge against the FIA and raising concerns over the legal process amid a swath of alterations to the rules made this year.
Her statement read:
“Formal exchanges are currently ongoing between my legal team and the FIA Administration, as the current electoral procedure raises legitimate concerns of conformity with the FIA statutes.
“Independent legal opinions obtained by my team also confirm that several recent procedural changes are inconsistent with the statutes and must be corrected.
“In accordance with Article 1.3 of the FIA statutes, the Federation must uphold the highest standards of governance, transparency and democracy.
All options - including legal and judicial ones - therefore remain under consideration to ensure that these principles are fully respected, in line with the FIA’s status as a French law non-profit association.
“As candidates, we share a collective responsibility to ensure that the FIA remains a beacon of transparency and democracy - principles that are the foundation of its legitimacy and global credibility.”
The race is likely over, but the story may continue on for a long while.

WRC champ Kalle Rovanpera set for circuit racing switch in 2026 (F1/WRC)
Kalle Rovanpera is a young star of Rally competition with a legacy that’ll last beyond his driving days. But instead of going after series records, Rovanpera has made a decision to chase his dreams in open wheel competition.
The 25-year-old announced Thursday that he’s changing focus with an aim of competing in what appears to be Formula 1, retiring from competition in the FIA World Rally Championship after 2025 with plans to spend at least one year in Japanese Super Formula before shifting to Formula 2.
Rovanpera didn’t outright say F1 is his ambition - he currently competes for Toyota, who currently focuses more on sports cars - but he admitted to DirtFish it’s “the highest level.”
The Finn is a two-time WRC champion and among Rally’s top modern stars, having spent six years in rallying’s top class with Toyota. The company will continue to support him in his shift to Super Formula.
His circuit racing experience is minimal, but not nonexistent. Rovanpera has contested events in both Porsche Carrera Cup Benelux and Italy since 2024, with three Benelux series victories. He’s made laps around the Red Bull Ring in an old Red Bull F1 car, along with both Formula 4 and Formula Renault 3.5 machinery.
He’ll be in for a new challenge in shifting to active open wheel competition. The closest recent comparison is Scott McLaughlin, who shifted from Supercars to the NTT IndyCar Series in 2021. From 2009 through 2011, F1 champion Kimi Raikkonen went in the opposite direction, competing in 21 WRC rallies over three years with a single stage win to show for it while also contesting a pair of NASCAR races.

I’m not saying Joey Logano is going to win his fourth Cup Series title this year. But if he’s going to make it happen, you’ll probably get an indication this weekend.
Logano’s had one proven trend in each of his three title campaigns: A win in the opening race of the Round of 8. The Team Penske star won the battle at Martinsville Speedway before “winning the damn war” (sorry, Martin Truex Jr. fans) in 2018. He went on to claim Round of 8 openers at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in both 2022 and 2024.
A win in this race doesn’t guarantee a Logano title. He accomplished the same feat at Kansas Speedway in 2020 only to come up two spots short in the finale. But it’s a sign that the 22 team’s right where it wants to be when it happens.
