Marco Andretti confirms racing retirement, memoir plans (IndyCar)
The son of 1991 CART champion Michael Andretti and grandson of the legendary Mario Andretti confirmed Wednesday that he’s done racing, both generally and in the Indianapolis 500.
“To my family, friends, teams, sponsors, and fans who have genuinely supported me for the last 30 years in motorsports, I want to thank you for allowing me the privilege to continue our family’s passion on the racetrack,” Andretti said in a statement posted
to social media. “I have had some really fun times behind the wheel in a lot of different types of racing cars — a lot of great memories as well, mostly at the Indy 500.
“Today, I am announcing my retirement from motor racing and the Indianapolis 500. That totals 20 starts at the Speedway, which I feel so fortunate to be able to say. That is ranked 12th all-time. Not bad for a 38-year-old. I am proud of my overall stats at
the Indy 500. I had six very legitimate shots at victory with Andretti Autosport and ended up with 20-percent top-3 finishes at the Speedway. It feels accomplishing to me to be able to retire having more podium finishes than my father Michael and the same
as my grandfather Mario at the biggest race in the world.
“I will never forget the rare circumstance of getting to race my dad in the closing laps for the win there – the pressure of participating in a dramatic Bump Day in 2011 to a pole position in 2020. That is what the Indianapolis 500 produces: extremes on both
ends. That is why I love and appreciate it so much. I am very much at peace with the next chapter in my life after dedicating three decades to the sport. I will be prioritizing most of my time on
Andretti will forever be remembered best for his photo finish loss to Sam Hornish Jr. in the 2006 Indy 500. But the Pennsylvanian has two-career wins, 20 Indy 500 starts and a 2020 Indy 500 pole to his name from an IndyCar career that spanned two decades, with
a best points finish of fifth in 2013.
While IndyCar was his most notable series, Andretti also made starts elsewhere. He was the second champion of the short-lived Superstar Racing Experience in 2022, made occasional sports car starts and a ome-off cameo in the then-new Formula E in 2014. Andretti
had also tested the waters in NASCAR over recent years, making nine appearances between the Xfinity and Craftsman Truck Series from 2022 through 2024, along with numerous starts in ARCA Menards Series competition.
Early in his retirement, Andretti expects to release a book.
“I am also coming out with a memoir about my life called ‘Defending the Dynasty,’” Andretti said. “Details coming soon on that. Competing at the top level of North American motorsport is and has been an honor for me, even in the tough times. That is where I
can look back and say I have made my best progress in life as a man.”
With the 38-year-old’s exit comes an unexpected opening for an Indy 500 ride with Andretti Global. It’s uncertain if anyone will take his place for the 2026 Month of May.

Jenson Button plans to end professional career after WEC finale (F1/Sports Cars)
The 2009 Formula 1 champion confirmed Wednesday that next weekend’s 8 Hours of Bahrain will be his last as a professional competitor. Button will be wrapping up a two-year tenure with Team Jota in the FIA World Endurance Championship.
Thus will end one of the more unique twilights of any modern racer’s career. Button left F1 after 2016, ending a career that saw a single title with Brawn and 15 Grand Prix victories. In the years since, Button has made appearances in everything from Extreme
E and rallycross to the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR’s special Garage 56 entry at the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2023.
It’s been a rewarding stretch. But at 45 years old and with nothing more to prove, Button is eager to leave professional driving behind and focus on being a dad.
“I’ve really enjoyed my time with Jota in WEC but my life has got way too busy and it’s not fair on the team or on myself to go into 2026 and think that I’m going to have enough time for it,” Button told BBC Radio Somerset.
“My kids are four and six and you’re away for a week and you miss so much, you don’t get this time back,” he added. “I feel like I’ve missed a lot the last couple of years, which has been fine because I knew that would happen, but I’m not willing to do that
again for another season.”
While his professional career will be over, Button will still make the occasional racing appearance. The Briton plans to make sporadic appearances in his own classic cars moving forward.
“I’ve got classic cars I love to race and for me that’s exciting because it’s mine - a car that I own - and I love the mechanical aspect,” Button said.. “It’s very different to the cars I race in WEC and F1, you’re really connected to it which I love, having
to heel and toe, getting the gear shift just right, no aero, it’s all mechanical.”
(Source(s): Sophie Hurcom & Jack Killah / BBC)
Number of the Day: 21
That’s the amount of wins Corey Heim and Connor Zilisch have combined to claim in their respective tours this year, earning 37.5% of all available race wins during the stretch. The pair have each had dominant campaigns, so be ready for some backlash this weekend
if they fail to bring home their respective championships over the next two days.
