 F1 implements updates ahead of Miami Grand Prix (F1)
In an effort to improve its controversial new product, Formula 1 has taken advantage of the lengthy Spring break and updated its 2026 technical regulations prior to the Miami Grand Prix.
The FIA, F1 team principals, Formula One Management and the CEOs of each engine manufacturer met Monday to cap off a month of meetings and discussions over rule changes. Each voted in favor of the proposed regulation changes, shifting the final proposals to an e-vote from the World Motor Sport Council before they’re officially implemented.
Included in the plans are multiple changes, with hopes to improve qualifying performance, race safety and visibility in wet conditions.
On the qualifying front, adjustments have been made to energy management and general energy limits. The hope is to alter the maximum duration of superclipping and entice competitors to drive flat-out during their qualifying laps. In order to accomplish this, the maximum permitted recharge level has been dropped and the kilowattage from superclipping power has been increased from 250kW to 350kW, theoretically limiting the recharge time during the lap.
Those changes will also apply to the race. In addition, the maximum power gain during usage of Boost Mode has ben restricted down to an additional 150kW and deployment of a car’s Motor Generator Unit Kinetic system will be “maintained at 350kW in key acceleration zones (from corner exit to braking point, including overtaking zones) but will be limited to 250kW in other parts of the lap,” effectively controlling when maximum power will be permitted to be used.
On race starts, a new system has been developed to help cars with an “abnormally low acceleration shortly after clutch release,” giving them “an automatic MGU-K deployment” in order to “ensure a minimum level of acceleration and mitigate start-related risks without introducing any sporting advantage.”
When it comes to wet weather, rear light systems have been simplified and tire blanket temperatures for intermediate tires have ben increased. The maximum deployment for engine energy power has been reduced to improve car control.

Honda confirms plans to end Acura LMDh program after 2026 (Sports Cars)
Days removed from Acura Meyer Shank Racing’s win in the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, Honda Racing Corporation USA confirmed plans to shutter the Acura GTP program. No reasons were given, though RACER’s Marshall Pruett reported last week that the program’s future was being pondered amid the state of global auto sales and shuttering of multiple EV programs.
“We are extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished during this era of Acura prototype racing, which began back in 2018 with the introduction of the Acura ARX-05 and we are committed to compete for the championship in IMSA’s GTP category through 2026 with the hybrid Acura ARX-06 competing in IMSA’s GTP category,” HRC USA president David Salters said in a prepared statement.“We’ve scored 25 wins, 34 poles and 10 championships during this time and look forward to finishing 2026 strong. I want to recognize all the talented women and men of HRC US, Acura, Meyer Shank Racing and ORECA who have worked tirelessly to get us to where we are in this highly competitive GTP field.”
In the GTP program’s absence, Honda plans to increase Acura’s branding within Meyer Shank Racing’s IndyCar program. The brand will dress up MSR’s sister No. 66 Honda with Acura logos, with plans for additional interaction beyond the Month of May.
“We’re excited for the Acura brand expansion into the IndyCar Series and we can’t wait to see our Acura livery take on the Indy 500,” Acura Brand Marketing manager Hundy Liu said in a release. “We saw a great response to the livery on Felix Rosenqvist’s MSR car last week at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, and I know it will be even more exciting to see the Acura brand on Marcus Armstrong’s car at Indianapolis.”
Honda’s Acura brand has contested IMSA’s top flight since 2018, securing three DPi class titles and a 2022 Rolex 24 at Daytona win along the way. It was one of four manufacturers to help launch the LMDh prototype era in 2023 and is the only LMDh entrant to avoid entering the FIA World Endurance Championship.
While continuing to work with Acura in IndyCar, Meyer Shank Racing is opening itself up to other options in IMSA moving forward.

“At the same time, Meyer Shank Racing remains open to continuing its presence in IMSA competition and exploring opportunities with other OEM partners.”

Formula E rolls out Gen4 car at Circuit Paul Ricard (Formula E)
Formula E officially launched its Gen4 car in a Tuesday track run at Circuit Paul Ricard in an early sign of the innovation to come with the tour’s 2026-27 season.
The unique all-electric car is a far cry from the low-speed, tiny capacity cars of the tour’s early days. It reaches a top speed of 208mph in qualifying or Attack Mode, with a peak output of 804bhp that sits nearly 70% higher than Gen3 machinery. The car has permanent all-wheel drive and will be 100% recyclable.
Three manufacturers - Porsche, Jaguar and Opel (a Stellantis brand) - set times on-track, though six manufacturers have been confirmed to field cars during the generation. The cars are heavier, up from 863kg to 950kg. They will be the first in Formula E to use a full wet tire as part of a tire supplier switch from Hankook to Bridgestone.
Formula E officials plan to use the machinery for the next four seasons, kicking off a new era for the all-electric series. The current Gen3 Evo era will wrap up with the current season’s London finale on Aug. 15-16.
“Gen4 isn’t just a car, it’s a statement of intent,’ Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds said in a release. “Seeing what it can do on track for the first time is a real milestone for Formula E – we are now delivering performance levels that were thought impossible for electric vehicles just five years ago.
“The step up in performance is immediately clear, from the speed and power to the way it delivers on track and there was a genuine buzz among everyone who witnessed it. This is a hugely exciting moment for the championship as we head into the upcoming 2026-27 season and a clear signal of where we are headed.
“This is just the beginning, as its refinement is now in the hands of our manufacturers – Porsche, Jaguar, Stellantis, Nissan, Lola Cars and Mahindra – to push development to even higher limits of performance ahead of its racing debut later this year.”

You have to lead the last lap to win the Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway, but recent history would indicate that you don’t have to lead many others. In eight races at the superspeedway in the Next Gen era, the winner has led as few as a single lap (Ross Chastain, 2022) and no more than 19 (Ricky Stenhouse Jr., 2024).
On average, the eventual Talladega winner has led just under 10 laps en route to victory. So if you want your favorite driver to win on Sunday, don’t root for them to spend too much time up at the head of the field.
