DRR set for full-time leap after acquiring RLL charter (IndyCar)
In a first for IndyCar amid its new era, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing announced Wednesday that it sold one of its three charters to DRR, paving the way for the typical Indy-only entrants to make a full-time shift in 2027.
This is the first sale and transfer of a charter since IndyCar introduced the system in 2024, awarding 25 of them to teams in an effort to add asset value similar to NASCAR.
“I want to thank Bobby Rahal, Mike Lanigan, David Letterman and Jay Frye for the way they approached this from our very first conversation,” DRR CEO Derek Reinbold said in a release. “They treated this as a partnership between two organizations that want to see each other succeed, and this announcement today reflects that.
“The NTT IndyCar Series is in the strongest position it has been in for decades, and that is a direct result of Roger Penske’s stewardship and leadership. The growth of this series, on the track and off, made this the right moment for our team to return to full-time racing. My dad built Dreyer & Reinbold Racing and poured his life into it, and our family has been part of the Speedway for four generations. Competing for a full season again is the truest way we can honor his legacy, and we intend to make him proud.”
RACER’s Marshall Pruett reported that the rumored sale price of the charter was $13 million. Regardless of the exact figure, whatever was paid will set an early benchmark for charter sales in the series.
The shift allows RLL to consolidate its resources and establish a more focused, simple two-car structure. With Graham Rahal seemingly staying put and Louis Foster on a multi-year deal, it leaves uncertainty over the future of Formula 1 transplant Mick Schumacher, who had his most complete performance to date Monday at Nashville Superspeedway.
“As we evaluated the long-term direction of our organization, we made the strategic decision to return our full-time program to two-cars beginning in 2027,” RLL co-owner Bobby Rahal said in a statement. “We believe this positions our team to be able to maximize our level of competition while allowing us to focus our resources as we prepare for the introduction of the new car.”
It’s uncertain who DRR will bring to its program for a full-time run next year. The company fielded Conor Daly and Jack Harvey in the Indy 500 and Daly would figure to be a real contender for the ride, though the team should have other options if it chooses. That includes Schumacher, who RACER reported is “understood to have a new personal sponsor who is interested in funding the rookie’s continuation in IndyCar” and “is said to have taken meetings with prospective teams.”

NASCAR shifts to 50-minute practices for the rest of 2026 (NASCAR Cup)
It’s time to talk about practice, man.
NASCAR announced Wednesday that the NASCAR Cup Series will have one consolidated 50-minute practice session for most tracks on its remaining schedule, beginning in the upcoming trip to New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Teams will be allowed an extra set of practice tires to account for the change.
For the bulk of the sport’s post-COVID era, practice has consisted of two shorter sessions featuring two groups of cars. The sessions were initially 20 minutes, but expanded to 25, with the field split up baed on the performance metric introduced to set grids during the pandemic. There are exceptions for new tracks and crown jewel events, including this weekend’s trip to Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Now one simplified, 50-minute session will be the norm, with two key exceptions: Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway will continue to go without practice this year. Impound procedures will stay in place and practice will be held from pit road, limiting the number of changes teams can make.
