Compression ratio drama fills early F1 26 discussions (F1)
Formula 1’s 2026 season is still months away, but drama surrounding the tour’s new regulations has already begun.
As part of the changes for the oncoming season, the FIA has reduced the compression ratio from 18:1 to 16:1. But there’s concern that two engine manufacturers - Mercedes and Red Bull Powertrains - may have found a way to supply a higher compression ratio limit at the higher, on-track operating temperature than when the ratio is measured in the paddock.
To describe this in basic terms (a necessity for me - I’m not the most mechanically-minded person), the idea is that parts are being designed to deliberately expand when the engine runs hot, allowing for a higher compression ratio - the ratio of the cylinder’s largest and smallest volumes. A higher ratio allows for additional power at the risk of engine knock, potentially providing faster acceleration and higher top speeds.
The current rule - article C.5.4.3 of the technical regulations, states that the measurement of the compression ratio will be “executed at ambient temperature,” hence the grey area in the rulebook that opens the ratio up for potential gamesmanship on track.
In its story on the development, The Race checked in with the FIA on the alleged issue, with the sanctioning body noting that the procedures are unchanged from the prior ruleset.
“The regulations clearly define the maximum compression ratio and the method for measuring it, which is based on static conditions at ambient temperature,” the FIA statement read. “This procedure has remained unchanged despite the reduction in the permitted ratio for 2026.”
At this point, it’s unlikely that anything will be changed in the rule prior to the start of the 2026 season. But the FIA suggested to The Race that “adjustments to the regulations or measurement procedures can be considered in the future,” implying that changes could come early next year if this has a significant impact on the early season results.
We should learn more as teams gear up for the 2026 season. The first test scheduled for 2026 is a private shakedown in Barcelona on Jan. 26-30, with a pair of public tests following in Bahrain on Feb. 11-13 and Feb. 18-20.

 Dario Franchitti making pro racing return at 24H Dubai (Sports Cars)
More than a decade on from his vicious, seemingly career-ending crash in a 2013 NTT IndyCar Series race at Houston, four-time series champion Dario Franchitti has announced a surprising return to pro racing.
The 52-year-old announced Friday that he’ll drive Team Parker Racing’s (TPR) No. 31 Mercedes-AMG GT3 Eco in January’s Michelin 24H Dubai, joining Rob Huff and father-son duo Shaun and Max Lynn to complete the car’s lineup. Shaun and Max are the father and brother, respectively, of Cadillac Hypercar star Alex Lynn.
Franchitti hasn’t contested a professional sports car race in many years, but the open wheel star has shown prowess in the discipline in the past. The Scottish ace was known for his success in IndyCar, where he also won a trio of Indianapolis 500s. But he also notched an overall win in the 2008 Rolex 24 at Daytona, earned class wins in both the Twelve Hours of Sebring and Petit Le Mans and previously competed in the American Le Mans Series.
For many years, it seemed the vicious shunt at Houston had permanently sidelined Franchitti with head and neck injuries. But he was cleared by doctors and Motorsport UK to compete in amateur classic car events in 2019 and is now set for a true competitive return.
The race with TPR will be something of a homecoming for Franchitti, who ran for Mercedes in the DTM during the early stages of his career. TPR regularly competes in the SRO British GT Championship. It’s switching from Bentley to Mercedes ahead of the Dubai race. The program is one of 39 GT3 entrants slated to contest the 24-hour event.

Brad Keselowski breaks leg in skiing accident, undergoes surgery (NASCAR Cup)
“Life has a way of reminding you to slow down,” Keselowski posted. “Grateful for my family by my side, an excellent medical team, and the ability to take a few steps forward today. Focused on Daytona. Bonus - I’m now bionic!”
RFK Racing also put out a statement on Keselowski’s injury, with the veteran adding that he’s “grateful for the medical team who took great care of me and for the support system around me.”
“My attention is now fully on recovery,” he said. “I’m motivated to get back to full strength as quickly as possible and will work relentlessly to be ready for Daytona.”
The 2012 NASCAR Cup Series champion, who will turn 42 on the week of the Daytona 500, hasn’t missed a Cup Series event in 580 races. He previously suffered a broken ankle in a Road Atlanta testing crash in 2011, but continued on undeterred, even winning days later at Pocono Raceway. He trails only Joey Logano (612) for consecutive appearances among all active drivers, having also dodged a potential missed race when wife Paige gave birth during the week last season.
Keselowski could theoretically skip the Cup Series’ first event, the exhibition Clash race at Bowman Gray Stadium (Feb. 1). But he’ll hope to be able to return for the Daytona 500 (Feb. 15), a race the drafting maestro has yet to win in 16 attempts despite earning a combined seven superspeedway victories.
The timing of the incident meant that Keselowski initially missed the tragic plane crash that killed former RFK (then Roush) Racing star Greg Biffle. He shared a story about Biffle when he learned the news.

The Scotsman secured four-straight championships when competing in the tour from 2007 through 2011, earning 16 wins including a pair of Indianapolis 500 victories along the way. It would stand among IndyCar’s top all-time achievements if it weren’t for one quirk - Franchitti took what ultimately became a gap year in 2008, attempting to leap to stock cars only to quickly depart after failing to secure the necessary sponsorship amid a declining economy.
