  MotoGP considering a rider transfer window for future silly seasons (MotoGP)
MotoGP is in the midst of a particularly interesting silly season in 2026. But at the same time that’s been rolling through, series stakeholders have considered a change to the system for signing riders in the future.
Motorsport’s Oriol Puigdemont reported Monday that MotoGP’s stakeholders are considering the introduction of a specific time window when teams would be allowed to sign riders. The report comes three days after a convening of the IRTA Management Council - a group including representatives from the teams’ association, IRTA, the teams themselves and even MotoGP sporting director Carlos Ezpeleta this time around - at Silverstone.
Over the course of a lengthy meeting, one of the topics that came up was the establishment of a rider transfer window, when teams could complete rider signings. This would match a similar concept in multiple mainstream sports, but particularly soccer.
The change is being considered to avoid a repeat of what’s played out in 2026. During the first half of this year, a surprisingly early period of rider moves that kicked off with Fabio Quartararo’s move in January has overshadowed much of the on-track action. Nearly the entire grid was sorted out by MotoGP’s summer break, when moves were traditionally finalized in the past.
Opinions are reportedly mixed on the concept. Some consider the idea “viable and positive,” while others are reluctant about a shift they feel would be difficult to pull off. The process would be complicated, particularly when it comes to the promotion of riders racing in lower categories like Moto2.

Austin Dillon rolls into Richmond Raceway’s annual Cup race weekend having won back-to-back races at the unique Virginia short track. Unfortunately for Dillon, this time around a win’s the only thing to chase. The former playoff regular has struggled in the Next Gen era and finds himself 27th in points entering this week, well out of Chase contention with the win-and-in format. But a victory for the 36-year-old would surely be relished by Richard Childress Racing amid an emotional, difficult season for the team.
