Steve O’Donnell named NASCAR CEO as Jim France steps down (NASCAR)
On the same week that Apple paved the way for its own future CEO change, America’s top motorsport also saw a seismic change at the top of its leadership structure.
NASCAR announced Saturday that Jim France had stepped away from the role of CEO, paving the way for Steve O’Donnell to step into the role. France is remaining involved as NASCAR chairman, with his great-nephew Ben Kennedy also promoted to the role of chief operating officer.
O’Donnell is the first non-France family member to hold the CEO role, ending a stretch of nearly 80 years with a member of the France family leading the charge. It’s another step up for the 57-year-old, who was named president in 2025 and became the de-facto No. 2 in the organization when Steve Phelps left his commissioner role in January.
In his new position, O’Donnell will oversee all aspects of NASCAR, from the namesake racing series and owned tracks to other owner tours like IMSA and the ARCA Menards Series. He reiterated plans to spend his early days listening and learning from his contemporaries throughout the industry.
“What I’m going to do is go out and do a lot of listening, especially the first 90 days,” O’Donnell told NASCAR.com. We’ve got so many talented people in the industry — team owners, drivers, track, sponsors, even our own internal personnel that I want to go have some conversations with about what do they see and what are the opportunities? I think the great news is, we’ve got an unbelievable foundation, right? We’ve got a great broadcast deal. We’ve got charters in place, a strong schedule. So all those nuts and bolts are there, and it’s really taking that and looking at how do we make NASCAR an absolute must-have sport in the future.”
France’s exit comes eight years after he took over as NASCAR CEO in 2018. The move, initially done on an interim basis as former leader Brian France was arrested on suspicion of DUI in New York, was made permanent in 2019. The 81-year-old has held the role since, leading NASCAR through the COVID-19 pandemic, into the Next Gen era and out of a challenging lawsuit with 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports that portrayed France negatively but ultimately ended in an amicable settlement that may help shape the future for the sport’s teams and charter system.
While less involved in the day-to-day aspect of NASCAR, France still holds a 54-percent ownership stake in the company. His niece, Lisa France Kennedy, owns the other 46 percent of the company. Her son, Ben, is stepping up to what amounts to second-in-command for the company as part of Saturday’s announcement.

Race Recaps
NASCAR
It was a weekend for first-time winners at one of NASCAR’s great equalizers - Talladega Superspeedway.
Cup Series: Stand back, NASCAR. There’s a Hurricane coming through.
After coming up just short in multiple recent superspeedway races, Carson Hocevar put himself in position and inched ahead on the bottom lane as the outside lane battled for position off Turn 4 to secure his maiden Cup Series win in Sunday’s Jack Link’s 500. (Holly Cain / NASCAR.com)

He celebrated in unique style.

Chris Buescher was briefly ahead on the final lap, but settled for second when Chase Elliott made a move for position two rows behind. Alex Bowman earned a much-needed result in third, with Elliott and Zane Smith wrapping up the top-five.

O’Reilly Auto Parts Series: Kyle Larson’s protege pulled off something Larson himself struggles with Saturday in Talladega - claiming a superspeedway win.
Corey Day’s rapid turnaround in the 2026 season reached its peak Saturday, as the 20-year-old pulled ahead as caution hit on the final lap to score his first O’Reilly win in the Ag-Pro 300.(Holly Cain / NASCAR.com)

Sheldon Creed had to settle for second, but went home $100,000 richer after claiming the Dash 4 Cash prize money. (Zack Albert / NASCAR.com)
ARCA Menards Series: It takes significant circumstances to make an underdog winner like Andy Jankowiak not be a crowd favorite, but Saturday’s ARCA race had a unique variable that made it so.
YouTube sensation Cleetus McFarland held the lead coming off turn 4 on the final lap, but when he and Gus Dean got to battling, the hard-working Jankowiak snuck past them both on the outside to score an emotional, cathartic win. (Brandon White / ARCARacing.com)

It was a disappointment for fans hoping to see McFarland pull off a major victory, but a big win for those in the paddock that know Jankowiak’s grit and work ethic.

GT World Challenge America: It was a day for the Pro-Am teams at Circuit of the Americas, as Wright Motorsports’ No. 31 Porsche of Dave Musial Jr. and Ryan Yardley claimed both class and overall honors in a three-hour race when a 10-second penalty knocked the dominant JMF Motorsports out of the top spot.
