The IHRA acquires Rockingham Speedway (NASCAR)
Months after it welcomed the return of NASCAR’s second and third tours, Rockingham Speedway has a new owner.
The
International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) announced Wednesday that it has acquired the iconic North Carolina facility, continuing the company’s ongoing expansion under owner Darryl Cuttell. It plans to update amenities and facilities, with hopes of
establishing the venue as a multi-use entertainment destination that can host anything from festivals to premier races.
“IHRA recognizes what Rockingham Speedway means to this community and to motorsports fans around the world,” Cuttell said in an IHRA press release. “This is a special place with a strong foundation. Our goal is to be good stewards of the facility, respect its
history, and work collaboratively to bring quality racing and entertainment back to The Rock.”
Once abandoned, Rockingham has seen renewed life in recent years. Aided by funding through the COVID-19 relief program in the early 2020s, the track was given several upgrades. That was enough to bring renewed attention and, ultimately, secure a spot on the
NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and Craftsman Truck Series schedules for 2025.
The races, held during the Cup Series’ lone off week on Easter weekend, were the first for any NASCAR series at the .940-mile oval since a pair of Truck races in 2012 and 2013. The weekend was considered a success, with NASCAR announcing plans for a return
in 2026.
While it’s largely laid dormant in recent years, Rockingham has a rich history. NASCAR previously brought the Cup and O’Reilly tours to the track from 1965 through 2004, holding a combined 120 races between the two series.
Despite being significantly overshadowed by the NHRA in the modern era, the IHRA has found itself frequenting racing news sources with acquisitions and plans since Cuttell took over ownership in Dec. 2024.
The company has purchased numerous racing facilities, with most coming from the drag racing space including planned NHRA playoff stop Maple Grove Raceway -
a
move that led the NHRA to shift its annual race away from the facility. The IHRA has also acquired the World Drag Racing Alliance and IHRA Australia, united the Pro Pulling League and Outlaw Truck and Tractor Pulling Association and announced plans
to combine Powerboat P1 USA/P1 Offshore and F1 Powerboat Racing into a new IHRA Offshore Racing Series, along with plans to launch a new cost-friendly IHRA Stock Car Series.
Cuttell owns Ohio’s Darana Hybrid, an electrical and mechanical contractor that notably works with various Elon Musk-led companies including Tesla, SpaceX and xAI.
