 IndyCar rolls out 2028 car on social media (IndyCar)
The NTT IndyCar Series’ next era is on the way.
IndyCar revealed its 2028-spec Indy Racing 28 (IR28) car on Tuesday afternoon, sharing renderings of the chassis on social media. It will be the official replacement for the Dan Wheldon 12 (DW12), which has competed since 2012.
Some initial testing is planned this week, with Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s road course the likely venue to host it.
“We are pleased to unveil renderings of the new chassis that will take our sport into an exciting new era,” IndyCar president Doug Boles said in a release. “As you can imagine, a project of this magnitude takes an incredible amount of planning, collaboration and execution. I would like to thank all of our partners including Dallara, Chevrolet, Honda, Firestone and Shell, who have worked tirelessly to create a package that will enhance IndyCar’s already incredible competition and industry-leading growth.”
The renderings show a car with similarities to the current DW12, albeit with key improvements and changes. It’s expected to have more power, with a 2.4-liter twin-turbocharged V7 engine compared to a 2.2-liter engine on the current car. It’ll start at 760hp, with hopes to improve to 800hp in the future.
Various weight savings have been found across the car, with a new six-speed transmission key among them. A significant change was made to the bell housing design to fit a larger battery back, allowing for the car’s low-voltage hybrid system. The car will feature a new energy storage system and motor generator unit, allowing for more power in longer bursts during deployment.
All told, the car should weigh roughly 100 pounds less than the DW12 while offering a power boost. It’ll continue to incorporate IndyCar’s aeroscreen while bringing back digital information panels on the side of the car. IndyCar will continue to use multiple aerodynamic packages dependent upon the type of race track being competed on.
The hope overall is to supply a light, quick car that will chase track records, improve safety standards and enhance the wheel-to-wheel battles throughout the schedule.
IndyCar’s most controversial change comes on damper development. The series is taking the development in-house through Penske Racing Shocks affiliate AXIS, removing a major location for team-based adjustments with the current car.

Chandler Smith leaving Front Row Motorsports in 2027 (NASCAR Trucks)
Craftsman Truck Series title contender Chandler Smith and Front Row Motorsports are parting ways at the end of the 2026 season.
The team confirmed as much in a statement shared to social media Tuesday, saying it wishes Smith “the best on his continued career path” while the team remains “committed to competing at the highest level in the series and contending for championships, for the remainder of 2026 and beyond.”
Tuesday’s news comes two weeks after Smith’s win at North Wilkesboro Speedway, his fourth in two years for the program. He currently sits third in the series standings, trailing dominant teammate Layne Riggs and Kaden Honeycutt.
Smith is rumored for a lap up to the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series next year - possibly with Richard Childress Racing, who will lose Jesse Love to Wood Brothers Racing in the Cup Series in 2027. He’s yet to say anything publicly about Front Row’s announcement.
The Georgian has previously spent two seasons in NASCAR’s second tour, having shifted to Kaulig Racing (2023) and then Joe Gibbs Racing (2024) after competing for Kyle Busch Motorsports for two years in the Truck Series. He made the step back down to Trucks with FRM in 2025 and has won two races apiece in each of the past two seasons.
It’s unclear who will replace Smith at Front Row.
