The chronically online have already heard of “6-7,” now let me present to you: 7-8.
Sunday’s runner-up result was Christopher Bell’s seventh of the year, continuing an unfortunate streak that has the Oklahoman sitting sixth in the championship standings despite being tied for second in top-fives (10).
And yet Bell isn’t the worst off of underwhelming expected title contenders entering the year. Defending champion Kyle Larson ended Sunday in 33rd to notch his fourth finish outside the top-10 in the past five races and eighth overall on the year.
The Californian is back to 10th in the standings amid a winless year himself and unlikely to be a true title contender this fall. Ouch.
