Formula E drivers sign onto explosive letter directed to the FIA president (Formula E)
While Formula 1’s stolen the bulk of the FIA’s attention with its polarizing new ruleset, the drivers of the sister Formula E series are bound to steal some spotlight with a huge Tuesday story.
In the letter are criticisms of various aspects of the series, most notably tied to stewarding and race direction. While noting “a lot of effort and improvement year over year with local ASNs, marshalling, safety, track conditions, technical fairness and general
protocols,” the letter points out a “shared and growing concern regarding the current standard, consistency, and procedural coherence of stewarding and race direction within the championship.”
Drivers call for an evaluation of race director Marek Hanaczewski, the appointment of driver advisors with Formula E experience and an independent review of stewarding consistency, noting a perceived lack of understanding of Formula E’s particular racecraft.
The Race also noted anonymously that several drivers indicated having “little or no professional faith in several senior officials in Formula E.”
Drivers conclude the letter with primary requests, including the establishment of a “formal structured driver-race direction forum, publishing clearer championship-specific stewarding guidelines, an independent review of stewarding consistency,” and the “creation
of error-correcting mechanisms in the processing of applying and delivering penalties.”
The Race didn’t publish the letter, but the outlet’s description of its general theme seems to focus on inconsistency and a lack of continuity in race control. This comes as Ben Sulayem is set to make an appearance at Formula E’s upcoming race in Jarama
later tin the week.
In additional reporting, the outlet notes a sense of shock from team leadership around the paddock and at least some level of sympathy for the FIA and Hanaczewski. It’s uncertain what the fallout will be, but the fact that every driver signed on and the letter
went directly to Be Sulayem clearly calls into question the professionalism of the organization and its direction.
Asked about the letter, an FIA spokesperson said the FIA is “in regular correspondence with ABB FIA Formula E World Championship manufacturers, teams and drivers on a variety of topics. We are reviewing the comments on sporting matters raised recently by drivers,
and will continue with the same proactive approach to develop and invest in this championship, ensuring the highest standards are maintained.”

Daniel Dye indefinitely suspended for homophobic mockery (NASCAR Trucks)
The Floridian will be required to undergo sensitivity training before he can return to the cockpit of his machine. AJ Allmendinger took his place last weekend at Darlington Raceway.
In a pair of clips from a stream on Whatnot, an e-commerce market app Dye and fellow NASCAR driver Brent Crews were using to stream the opening of various racing trading cards, Dye began to talk about meeting Malukas during promotion for the recent IndyCar-Truck
Series doubleheader in St. Petersburg.
Dye began to mock Malukas’ voice after talking about asking the Team Penske driver if he raced on an ovals. Crews walked away and generally didn’t engage, while Dye went on to make direct inferences about Malukas’ sexuality.
The clips spilled onto social media Wednesday morning. By the late afternoon, Dye had been suspended. Dye later put out a statement on social media.
It read:
I want to first apologize to David Malukas. I recently went on a live stream with some friends and made some careless comments. I chose my words poorly, and I understand why it upset people. I’m sorry to anyone who was offended. That’s not how I want to
represent myself.
“I have some close friends in the LGBTQ+ community who / would never want to feel less of themselves because of what I said, and that’s exactly why I should hold myself to a higher standard. In talking with them, I realize that a true friend would know better
than to act the way I did and for that I need to be a better friend.
“What I said doesn’t reflect how I feel about them or anyone else. I didn’t think enough before I spoke, and l in no way meant any harm. I know that intention does not erase impact and I need to do better.
“I’m taking this seriously and working on being more aware and respectful moving forward. I’m sorry to everyone I let down. I am committed to learning from this and better understanding that the impact that my decisions can have on others. That includes
educating myself, listening to those affected, and taking meaningful steps to ensure my actions reflect respect and inclusivity going forward.
“I know I’ve got a platform and a responsibility, and I need to use it better.”
Dye sat 13th in the Truck Series standings prior to the suspension after a trio of top-20 runs to open the year. He’ll figure to be a long shot to make the playoffs with missed races.

WRC announces UK return in Rally Scotland (Rally)
WRC officials announced Monday that the series has reached an agreement with Rally Scotland to run it as a WRC event for the next three years. The news ends an eight-year hiatus for English WRC fans, bringing the tour to Scotland for the first time since 1995
in a rally that should largely consist of gravel stages.
“Rallying has always held a special place in the story of British motorsport and, for me personally, it has been a huge part of my life,” Motorsport UK Chairman David Richards said in a press release. “Having experienced the World Rally Championship from inside
a rally car, I know just how unique the atmosphere of a UK rally can be: the forests, the fans and the extraordinary community of volunteers and motor clubs who make these events so special.
“We are incredibly grateful to the Scottish Government, Aberdeen City Council and Aberdeenshire Council for their commitment to this event. Their support has made it possible to bring the World Rally Championship back to the UK, and Scotland provides a spectacular
stage for the next chapter of that story.”
No date was locked in for the race, but DirtFish’s David Evans reported that “it’s understood a traditional slot in the fall will be found for an event anchored in Aberdeen’s P&J Live arena – the venue hosting an indoor service park.”
The Scottish Government, Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Council have invested in Rally Scotland. In doing so, they’ll attract a tour with strong ties to the local populace despite the region never hosting a full WRC event. Various Scottish stars have emerged
on the WRC in the past, from Colin McRae and Derek Ringer to Louise Aitken-Walker.

BMW brings April Fool’s car to life for Nurburgring 24 run (Sports Cars)
Does an April Fool’s joke still count as one if it becomes real?
The entry will be entered by Schubert Motorsport and run on Yokohama tires. Schubert will field Jens Klingmann, Ugo de Wilde and Americans Connor De Phillippi and Neil Verhagen in the machine.
“A project like this has never existed at BMW M Motorsport before,” BMW Motorsports Director Andreas Roos said in a release. “I am thrilled – and at the same time, I am certain that our fans, who are never closer to us than at our second home on the Nurburgring,
will be just as excited.”
BMW kickstarted this project with a prank. Nearly a year ago, the company’s social media accounts posted a rendering of a G81-based GT3 machine as an April Fool’s Joke, garnering well over 1 million views and significant engagement. The interaction caught the
eye of BMW leadership and, more than 11 months later, has now elicited a real product.
The newly-christened “BMW M3 Touring 24H” was built over the course of eight months and shares a technical base with the BMW M4 GT3 Eco, albeit with the body style of the standard BMW M3 Touring car. That makes it slightly longer and higher than the Evo.
