Hello Everyone!

We are working on a STEPBible enhancment to show a word frequency that matches the Bible(s) selected by the users.  The frequency of a word is in STEPBible is currently static regardless of the Bible selected by the user.

The upcoming software is running on https://beta.stepbible.org.  Please try it and let us know what you think.

Below are the key enhancesments.

1. Frequency count in the quick lexicon (red arrow in screenshot below) and sidebar lexicon (green arrow in screenshot below) are based on an actual search result from the Bible selected by the user.  When more than one Bibles are selected, it will use the largest frequency count.

2. There is a new info icon next to the frequency in the sidebar lexicon (green arrow in screenshot below).  A mouse over of the info icon will show the frequency from most of the Bibles tagged with Strong numbers (red arrow in screenshot below).

3. We have added preliminary support of DStrong (an extended strong) for LXX, ABEn in OT and ABGk in OT (blue arrow in screenshot below).

If you want to know why there are different frequency counts, we have written a document to explain.  By the way, the different frequency counts are not caused by STEPBible.

He seeks to look at various dimensions of heaven - how to assure one will get there, what is lifelike and related questions. Does / can your program be used, Is it difficult to use.  I can do searches on refs - what does the program do that is more? I have skills to do word studies but this apps seems nrxt stage to what i have access to.

Hello George,

STEPBible can perform word search in English, Greek and Hebrew.  You can search on words like heaven, ouranos (Greek), sha.ma.yim (Hebrew), ...  You can watch an overview of STEPBible on Youtube.

From a rational perspective, the answers to your friend's question can be found in good theological books. If your friend need that type of information, I suggest to look for some good books on the topic.  Maybe a good library (e.g.: a seminary library) with good theological books.

You friend wants to "assure one will get there (heaven)".  I suspect information on heaven will not necessary answer his question.  I suspect your friend need emotional and spiritual care in addition to information. For example, a friend to listen to him and to pray for him.  He probably need God to carry him through this difficult time.  Does your church or his church have a grief support ministry?  You might want to look for that type of minisry for him.

I found Revelation 21 helpful when I lost my father.  I medidated on that short passage and gradually (over a few years) turned my grief into a hope.

Blessings,
Patrick

Looks like a very interesting feature!

Couple of points.  First one nothing to do with this, but I’m getting ‘Unexpected error’ on entry to beta.stepbible.  Doesn’t seem to have an obvious effects, though.   (Brave browser on Win 11 in case that’s relevant.)

Second, I’m not sure it’s quite clear to the user what’s being shown here.  (I think your note about frequency counts at the end of the email probably addresses this, but I’m thinking about someone coming to STEP and simply looking at what’s on the screen.)

Take, for example, what happens if you click on ‘light’ in ESV Gen 1.  At the bottom of the screen you see ‘Occurs 121 times in ESV’.  I think my assumption as a new user, reading this, would be that if it talks about ‘in ESV’, it must be a count of the number of times the English word ‘light’ turns up in the translation; and therefore my further assumption would be that it refers to the entire text of the ESV, OT and NT.

But if I then bring up the side-panel and click on the ‘121x’ in the phrase which says ‘This word occurs about 121 x’, all of the references are in the OT.  That then contradicts my earlier assumption: whatever this is, it doesn’t really appear to be an aspect of the ESV translation after all; rather, perhaps it is actually counting the number of times the Hebrew word underlying ‘light’ turns up in the Hebrew text used by the translators.  But then that leaves me wondering what the reference to ‘in ESV’ really means.

I’m not at all querying the facility itself – just wondering whether the user is going to be left unclear as to what it’s saying.

Jamie

Jamie,

Thanks for your important message.

For the second issue, what is a solution?   Should we change the message to say, “this Hebrew word occurs xx times in ESV?”

I will use the Brave browser to find out about the first issue.

Thanks,
Patrick
