For the last 5+ months, we have been working on the search user interface to make it easier for new users and support the existing search features.

Please test our new search user interface on https://dev.stepbible.org.

Thanks,
Patrick

I think the proposed new interface is simpler and easier for people to use.

HOWEVER, I cannot find some of the features in the advanced search options in the new interface. In particular, I like the semantic search features (as opposed to form search), i.e. "Words with the same meaning", "Greek words meaning:...", and "Hebrew words meaning:..."

If those search capabilities are still there, then they need to be made more visible. And if they have been removed, then I would like to ask for bringing them back (perhaps by reintroducing the "advanced search" option in the interface).

Andrew,

Thanks for your excellent feedback.

I have added some code to detect strong numbers entered by the user and then automatically switch to either the Hebrew or Greek tab.

I also updated the help text you mentioned.

Please try it.

At first glance, whereas with the previous search one just typed in a Strongs number, now one has to choose English, Hebrew or Greek. It was easier before with the advanced search option.

In addition, under the box for typing there is the following:

What you can enter:

  • An English word (to find Hebrew words with the same meaning)
  • Transliteration (type it like it sounds)
Should this message be related just to the English tab and not all three tabs? Does this need to relate to Hebrew and Greek tabs?

Megumi,

All the search features are there.  Nothing is taken away.  The screenshots below show the three types of searches you mentioned.

The description for the type of search have changed based on user input and our analysis and design.  I personally like "Greek words meaning" better but I think other STEPBible volunteers like the new wording because it is easier for new users to understand.

The current STEPBible design which shows 7 types of searches is hard for new users to understand.  Showing all 7 types of search is also too much for mobile devices.  Hopefully this new search user interface will help the new users.

Dear Patrick

Great idea to sent this email here.
I noticed that the first time I go to BETA and click on Q, I get
image.png

After I've tapped on a tab ("English", "Hebrew" or "Greek") I get the "What you can enter...."

The way to test this is to open an Incognito tab and going to https://beta.stepbible.org/

Patrick,

Thank you for this explanation. I am clear now.

And thank you for your work to make sure nothing good is lost in this revision!

Personally, I was happy with the old UI, but I can see that the revised UI will look simpler and easier to many.

Michael,

Thanks for letting me know.  I have changed the software to re-display the previously entered text after a change of range.

Please try again.

Hi Patrick,
It looks much easy to use UI,

please check -
#1 - type something to search
#2 Change range (/ Select some other book)

It will remove your typed 'to be searched' word (of #1)

Michael

Megumi,

Many of us are happy with the current UI, but the old UI has the following weaknesses:
  • For users who do not know Hebrew and Greek or users who do not have in-depth Bible study experience, showing Hebrew and Greek is too much information for them.
  • Many new users the current UI search provides too many options.
  • Mobile phone users often have limited space and the new search UI only shows a few types of search under the English, Hebrew and Greek tabs.
We hope the new UI will encourage the new users to use STEPBible.

For the last two days, we received very helpful feedback.  A few bugs were identified and fixed.  A few enhancements were implemented.

Please use the https://dev.stepbible.org website and continue to provide your feedback.

Thanks,
Patrick

The new search UI looks good to me. I imagine that this means you will soon be preparing a new version of desktop app for different OS platforms. For macOS platform, please remember to make it as an application bundle.

Thank you!
