I. LOCAL
--I. A. MEETING ON AFFORDABLE DENTAL CARE
On Sunday, January 29, at 2:30, Virginians Organized for Interfaith
Community Engagement (V.O.I.C.E.) will meet in the parish center of
St. John Neumann (11900 Lawyers Road, Reston, VA 20191) with Sen.
Janet Howell and Fairfax Chairperson Sharon Bulova. They will report
on their efforts to raise donations from local corporations to help
fund a dentist at the Sterling Northern Virginia Dental Clinic. Anyone
who can attend is encouraged to do so, as a strong turn-out will
demonstrate to elected officials that there is strong support for this
project.

II. STATE
--II. A. ADVOCATE AGAINST GUN BILLS
Tomorrow, Wednesday, January 25, the Virginia Senate Courts of Justice
Committee will bring up a series of gun-related bills that would have
disastrous consequences for public safety in the Commonwealth. These
bills decrease protections for human life, which is sacred. The
Virginia Center for Public Safety encourages us to help keep Virginia
safe by calling the members of the committee as soon as possible and
asking them to vote NO on the following:
SB 323 - Would eliminate Virginia's "One Handgun a Month Law," which
serves as a deterrent against the bulk trafficking of illegal
guns.
SB 324 - Would force Virginia's public colleges and universities to
allow the carrying of guns on campus.
SB 612 - Would allow individuals to purchase rifles and shotguns
without going through a state background
check.
SB 67 & SB 670 - Would remove the fingerprinting requirement for those
obtaining concealed handgun permits.

--II. D. URGE CO-PATRONAGE OF BILL BANNING EMBRYO-DESTROYING RESEARCH
The Virginia Catholic Conference urges Catholics to contact their
House of Delegates member in support of HB 1162, which would ban
embryo-destructive research in Virginia. Already, the resistance to
the bill by biotech interests has been severe, and grassroots support
will be critical to overcome this effort to defeat the bill. Go to

to send a pre-drafted (but editable) message to your delegate.
