Hello all!  If you were disappointed by the last e-mail stating that August 1st Summer Harvest was the last of the summer, never fear!  There are two more gatherings of Summer Harvest goodness ahead!  I will be hosting the August 8th Summer Harvest at 7 p.m. at my house, 2665 S. Clarkson St., Denver, CO 80210. We will not be having Summer Harvest on August 15th in honor of the Feast of Our Lady's Assumption, but we will be having it at my house again on August 22nd!  I hope to see you all here August 8th and 22nd!

Last week at Summer Harvest in conjunction with our discussion on Catholic social teaching, we touched lightly on the Catholic principle of subsidiarity. We will be exploring that concept more deeply as it relates to economics, and to social welfare, specifically by discussing the ideas of economist E.F. Schumacher. In the 1970's, Schumacher published a book titled Small is Beautiful: Economics as if People Mattered. His ideas became the foundation for the Green Party, and he became very popular with more radical left-wing thinkers. What many secular liberals didn't understand, or perhaps chose to ignore, is that Schumacher was a recent convert to Catholicism, that his ideas were heavily influenced by Catholic principles of subsidiarity, and that he was a staunch supporter of the encyclical Humanae Vitae, the principles of which are generally not accepted by the Green Party and other secular followers of his ideals. Noted Catholic author Joseph Pearce is a follower of Schumacher's ideals and has written an updated book to follow up on the ideas, Small is Still Beautiful: Economics as if Families Mattered. Now, I recognize that if you haven't read the books it would be difficult to discuss them and Schumacher's reasoning, so I've provided some links with summaries, reviews, and other information. I'll also be doing an introduction next Monday that hopefully can spark some discussion!

A biography of Schumacher's life and discussion of his works:

A book review/summary of Pearce's book, which is a summary of Schumacher's ideas and application to today's world (continues in multiple parts, linked at the bottom of each blog entry):

A more detailed review/summary of the same; the font and colors are slightly easier to read on this one:

The actual introduction to Pearce's book (begins on pg. 11 of the pdf):

Finally, an interview with Joseph Pearce about E.F. Schumacher and his ideas:
