SITREP 1: Cyclonic Storm 'Remal' - Update

Please find attached the first Situation Report (SITREP) on the impending cyclonic storm 'Remal' affecting West Bengal.

 

Overview:

Cyclonic storm ‘Remal’, originating in the central Bay of Bengal, is expected to escalate into a severe cyclonic storm by May 25 & 26. According to the joint Bulletin of INCOIS-IMD issued on May 25, 2024, at 09:45 hrs. IST, the storm has intensified into a Deep Depression and is likely to become a Cyclonic Storm within the next 12 hours. It is projected to cross the Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts by May 26 midnight as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with wind speeds of 110-120 kmph, gusting to 135 kmph.

 

Govt. Preparedness:

  1. The National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) met to review preparedness for the impending cyclone in West Bengal.
  2. In West Bengal, State and District EOCs activated. District control rooms are monitoring the situation. Adequate shelters, power supply, medicine, and emergency services have been prepared.
  3. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has deployed 09-disaster relief teams at strategic locations to minimize potential loss of life and property at sea.
  4. The Odisha Government has directed authorities in four districts to undertake preparatory measures. Alerts have been issued to the collectors of Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, and Mayurbhanj.
  5. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea until May 27 and are urged to return to the coast.

 

Humanitarian & IAG West Bengal Preparedness:

  • IAG-West Bengal held its first Pre-Cyclone Coordination meeting on 25th May; 10:30-11:30 AM IST. The 02nd coordination meeting to follow on 26th May 2024, Sun, at 10:30 AM IST.
  • The meeting was attended by representatives of UNICEF, NDRF, State and District Disaster management Cell and INCOIS (Digha unit of Vidyasagar University) along with District IAG
  • Identification of JRNA volunteers/ team in the process. Registration form has been circulated.
  • IAG volunteers to be linked with NDRF team at ground zero.
  • Miking is going on both by Administration and CSOs. West Bengal Radio club (HAM) is ready for the response work
  • No such evacuation is planned but MPCs are getting ready for the relief centers.
  • Challenges: Due to election some relief shelters are used for the accommodation of CRPF and other central force
