When 16yr old high schooler Juno MacGuff decides to try sex, she picks her friend Paul Bleeker (played by Michael Cera of Superbad). She gets pregnant and takes a pregnancy test thrice to confirm the result. She tries to "procure a hasty abortion", but then freaks out after visiting the abortion clinic. Like anything else about their lives, this myspace teen declares the news to the world. Bleeker is obviously more stunned, but Juno decides to keep the baby. She wants to put up the baby for adoption and her best friend suggests penny saver ads. (Whoa! As cheap as it sounds, isn't penny saver section the best place to target a single mother who is probably going to struggle raise her kid and so will eventually put the kid for abortion !!!???). Juno finds a picture perfect couple (played by Jason Bateman of Arrested Development and Jennifer Garner) who are ready to adopt the baby. Well, at least, Jennifer is ready.
For the rest the movie, we see Juno grow up as she completes nine months. If the situation sounds messy, you are not the only finding it so. All Juno can do is find humor in the situation. Juno's dad and stepmom are surprisingly supportive and equally witty when it comes to cracking crisp one-liners. Michael Cera being a 16 yr old timid kid and Jason Bateman, a child in grown up body suit, the movie has the perfect setting for being as feministic as it can be. In one scene where Juno has her ultrasound, there are four women in the scene: Juno, her best friend, her step mom and the ultrasound technician. The ultrasound technician passes on her amateur wisdom about how 16yr olds are not best suited for raising a baby. The step mom gives her such a caustic verbal abuse that as a viewer, I could actually feel some of that sting for entertaining the same thought. The scene actually provides some bonding material between Juno and stepmom.
All in all, the director and writer have crafted a movie that is so complimentary to "Knocked Up", that was released earlier this year during summer. The movie is full of witty lines, lovable characters and simple songs. My only concern however is the role the movie could play in the whole Roe v. Wade debate and how the movie makes 16yr old pregnancy looks cooler. Well, actually, the movie doesnt endorse 16yr old pregnancies, but super coool Ellen Page as Juno definitely makes it less messier and wittier.
I know I am going to watch the movie again and again.
