A Journey to the Mountains

A new virtual reality film that takes you into the heart of the Nuba Mountains debuts today at SXSW® and on NYT VR

For the policy makers, journalists, human rights supporters and others who cannot go to the Nuba Mountains, the new virtual reality film "We Who Remain" brings the Nuba Mountains to you. The film, co-produced by Nuba Reports and Emblematic Group, premieres today at South by Southwest® (SXSW®) film festival and on The New York Times VR app.

In six years of war, Nuba Reports has sought to make the forgotten conflict in the Nuba Mountains news - by covering it with our team of reporters and supporting other journalists to do the same. Yet access remains a major obstacle: Sudan has effectively made it a crime to do journalism there and long blocked aid and human rights monitoring.

To bring outsiders in, Nuba Reports decided to experiment with the emerging medium of virtual reality. Shooting began a year ago, during the fighting season when SPLA-N and Sudan government soldiers were battling for territory. Our team followed four Nuba people - a student, a mother, a journalist, and a rebel soldier - whose stories are woven together for an experience both personal and eye-opening. It was created in collaboration with NYT VR, AJ+ and Arte.

In addition to SXSW®, "We Who Remain" will be screened this month at CPH:DOX, Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival. We would welcome other opportunities to share the film with policy makers, human rights defenders, and others - please reach out if you would like to collaborate.
