Nestlé Sucks the Pure Life out of You

Do you know how to turn ordinary water into a billion-dollar business? In Switzerland there's a company which has developed the art to perfection - Nestlé. This company dominates the global business in bottled water.

Swiss journalist Res Gehringer has investigated this money-making phenomena. Nestlé refused to cooperate, on the pretext that it was "the wrong film at the wrong time". So Gehringer went on a journey of exploration, researching the story in the USA, Nigeria and Pakistan. His journey into the world of bottled water reveals the schemes and strategies of the most powerful food and beverage company on our planet.

While the world's population continues to grow at an alarming rate, water is becoming an increasingly scarce commodity. The Swiss film "Bottled Life" documents the booming business with bottled water, by focusing on the global leader in this lucrative multi-billion dollar market – namely, the Nestlé corporation in Switzerland. Nestlé currently controls more than 70 of the world's bottled water brands, among them Perrier, San Pellegrino and Vittel.

BOTTLED LIFE

Nestlé's annual sales of bottled water alone total some CHF 10 billion. And yet the company prefers not to discuss its water business – as Swiss journalist Res Gehriger discovered when researching this documentary film. The Nestlé management refused to give any interviews or assistance or to provide information. But Gehriger persisted, and discovered just how controversial and conflict-laden the company's international operations are.

Water war in the USA

To be able to sell and make money from water, you first have to own it. In the case of Nestlé this applies to many parts of the United States, by far the biggest market for its booming bottled water business. Whoever owns land or has acquired leasing rights is permitted to pump as much water as he likes. In the rural state of Maine, Nestlé has purchased many such water rights and resources. Every year the company pumps out millions of cubic metres of water, for transportation in road tankers to huge bottling factories. In the small towns of Fryeburg, Newfield and Shapleigh, journalist Res Gehriger witnessed how Nestlé tries to stifle and suppress local opposition to its operations with an army of powerful PR consultants, lawyers and lobbyists.

Nestlé's expansion strategy

"Bottled Life" focuses a critical spotlight on Nestlé's global expansion strategy in the business of bottled water. In the United States and Europe, the company sells mainly spring water with a designation of origin. In developing countries, however, the corporation pursues another concept – namely Nestlé Pure Life. This product is purified groundwater, enriched with a Nestlé mixture of minerals. Nestlé Pure Life was the brainchild of Peter Brabeck, a Nestlé man almost all his life, a former CEO and currently Chairman of the Board. Today Nestlé Pure Life is the world's top-selling brand of bottled water.

Test market Pakistan

Res Gehriger's research took him to Pakistan, Nestlé's test market for its Pure Life product. The company refused him access to its production plant in Pakistan – but Gehriger did get to see something of life outside the factory fence. In the nearby village groundwater levels have fallen dramatically, and the village fountain water is nothing more than foul-smelling sludge.

Nestlé Pure Life is a clever business concept. And particularly so in the developing world. In countries such as Pakistan where the public water supply has failed or is close to collapse, the company proudly presents its bottled water as a safe health-enhancing alternative. But for the overwhelming majority of consumers, it is an expensive out-of-reach alternative. In Lagos, for example, the mega metropolis of Nigeria/Africa with its population of millions, water always comes at a price. The scenario of a city in which everyone has to pay for life-giving water, is already a sad reality in Lagos. Families eking out an existence in the slums spend half their meagre budget on canisters of water. The upper class?  They purchase Nestlé Pure Life.

Whitewashing the water business

Nestlé places great priority on promoting its image. And when it comes to water, it's Peter Brabeck in particular who does the promoting. As CEO – and even more so after becoming Chairman of the Board in 2005 – he developed a communications strategy which operates under such noble pretences as "Corporate Social Responsibility" and "Creating Shared Value." A preached philosophy – but a practised one?

In researching this film, journalist Res Gehriger comes to a sad and sobering conclusion. It is that of a company intent on amassing resource rights worldwide. With the aim of dominating the global water market of the future.

GERMAN TV DOCUMENTATION Bottled Life (German language/partly English):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9f9Ko_hLHYk

Several expert- and activist-groups investigating the crimes Nestlé commits the world over were infiltrated by spies and undercover agents - sent and paid for by Nestlé. They did this in professional secret service manner, a court case against Nestlé revealed. Lives and reputation of activists were seriously affected if not outright ruined and in Colombia even one activists working with the labour union was murdered. Nestlé was finally prosecuted at least for the crime of espionage, but in developing nations the food- and water-barons are apparently above the law.

Many local people living at the sources, from where Nestlé robs the water, do NOT even get a drop from the water the corporation pumps away into their money-shaking scams. South-Africa's neo-Apartheid government is since 2011 under facilitation of Water Minister Mrs. Edna Molewa in bed with the corporate "Water-Resources-Group" lead by Nestlé, while local people get sick from the water they are left with. Water is today robbed like diamonds and gold from the ancestral lands of indigenous peoples, who get evicted and are persecuted.

This all under the guidance of the global banksters and their WorlBank, it's  IFC as well as the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

A TV Journalist Debunks Nestlé’s Water Rhetoric

By Briana Kerensky

Working to expose the truth about Nestlé’s dangerous and unethical bottled water sales sometimes feels like trying to storm a castle. Nestlé, the largest purveyor of bottled water in the world, hides their efforts to privatize public water sources behind walls of powerful marketing schemes. They don’t sell water; they sell a lifestyle of “health” and “wellness.” Nestlé tries to pass its product off as “Pure Life,” as their most popular brand’s name suggests. So how are smart consumers supposed to fight against “Pure Life?”

Well, Nestlé’s castle starts to show some cracks. In a great segment on Russia Today’s “Breaking the Set,” host Abby Martin responded to a video message from the corporation in which they tried to defend their water-grabbing tendencies. In the video, a Nestlé spokesperson claims that the corporation’s top priorities are consumers, the environment and the human right to water.

The truth is, as Martin makes clear, that Nestlé’s only real priority is padding its bottom line. In the “Breaking the Set” segment, which you can watch below, the reporter refutes the corporation’s statements, pointing out that consumers are wasting money on a product that costs thousands of times more than tap water from their faucet, even though almost half of bottled water comes from municipal water systems; Nestlé continues to tap ground water sources during times of drought. While Nestlé is currently promoting the human right to water through marketing schemes, this only came about after public backlash that ensued when Chairman and former CEO Peter Brabeck went on record saying that water is neither a public nor a human right.

While Abby Martin did an admirable job at scaling Nestlé’s barriers, she did make a small error. In the segment, she calls out the corporation for sourcing the Pure Life brand‘s water from a hatchery raising endangered salmon in Oregon. While Nestlé does have its sights on bottling water in Cascade Locks, the hatchery water would go into “Arrowhead” bottles, not Pure Life ones.

Every year, Nestlé spends millions of dollars trying to brand itself as a purveyor of a vital and private resource. And while their marketing says that water is a human right, as Peter Brabeck has shown, it’s nothing more than a ploy to assuage concerns about their water grabbing ways. Water is a public resource and should be accessible to all, and not at the expense of our wallets and environment. As “Breaking the Set” showed, when consumers are armed with facts, we can take the corporations’ defences down and expose the truth.

Nestle CEO: Water Is Not A Human Right, Should Be Privatized

By Anthony Gucciardi (NaturalSociety)

Is water a free and basic human right, or should all the water on the planet belong to major corporations and be treated as a product? Should the poor who cannot afford to pay these said corporations suffer from starvation due to their lack of financial wealth? According to the former CEO and now Chairman of the largest food product manufacturer in the world, corporations should own every drop of water on the planet — and you’re not getting any unless you pay up.

The company notorious for sending out hordes of ‘internet warriors’ to defend the company and its actions online in comments and message boards (perhaps we’ll find some below) even takes a firm stance behind Monsanto’s GMOs and their ‘proven safety’. In fact, the former Nestle CEO actually says that his idea of water privatization is very similar to Monsanto’s GMOs. In a video interview, Nestle Chairman Peter Brabeck-Letmathe states that there has never been ‘one illness’ ever caused from the consumption of GMOs.

Watch the video for yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEFL8ElXHaU

The way in which this sociopath clearly has zero regard for the human race outside of his own wealth and the development of Nestle, who has been caught funding attacks against GMO labeling, can be witnessed when watching and listening to his talk on the issue. This is a company that actually goes into struggling rural areas and extracts the groundwater for their bottled water products, completely destroying the water supply of the area without any compensation. In fact, they actually make rural areas in the United States foot the bill.

As reported on by Corporate Watch, Nestle and former CEO Peter Brabeck-Letmathe have a long history of disregarding public health and abusing the environment to take part in the profit of an astounding $35 billion in annual profit from water bottle sales alone. The report states:
“Nestlé production of mineral water involves the abuse of vulnerable water resources. In the Serra da Mantiqueira region of Brazil, home to the “circuit of waters” park whose groundwater has a high mineral content and medicinal properties, over-pumping has resulted in depletion and long-term damage.”
Nestle has also come under fire over the assertion that they are actually conducting business with massive slavery rings. Another Corporate Watch entry details:
“In 2001, Nestlé faced criticism for buying cocoa from the Ivory Coast and Ghana, which may have been produced using child slaves.[58] According to an investigative report by the BBC, hundreds of thousands of children in Mali, Burkina Faso and Togo were being purchased from their destitute parents and shipped to the Ivory Coast, to be sold as slaves to cocoa farms.”
So is water a human right, or should it be owned by big corporations? Well, if water is not here for all of us, then perhaps air should be owned by major corporations as well. And as for crops, Monsanto is already working hard to make sure their monopoly on our staple crops and beyond is well situated. It should really come as no surprise that this Nestle Chairman fights to keep Monsanto’s GMOs alive and well in the food supply, as his ideology lines right up with that of Monsanto.

----------
Ten facts you should know
  1. Bottled water is one of the company's key strategic money makers: Nestlé has an annual turnover of bow CHF 110 billion (97bUSD) – of which almost 10% is derived from the bottled water business.
  2. Nestlé has achieved world dominance in the bottled water business – by taking over such leading brands as Perrier.
  3. Nestlé is constantly buying up additional valuable groundwater resources – in order to satisfy the massive demand it has created for bottled water.
  4. Nestlé is taking advantage of the often out-of-date water rights in many locations by operating to the limits of legality – not only in developing countries but also in the USA and elsewhere in the industrialized world.
  5. Nestlé spares no effort in exerting financial, legal and political pressure – on anyone campaigning for water ownership as a public property and human right.
  6. Nestlé is using up precious natural water resources – to create and commercialize "new" water.
  7. Nestlé promotes bottled water with extensive global marketing and advertising campaigns – undermining awareness for the necessity of a functioning public water supply system.
  8. Nestlé promotes itself as a benefactor – by donation and PR campaigns at local level. But at the same time it manipulates public opinion into believing that improvements in production and distribution are having a sustainable effect.
  9. Nestlé creates dependence on bottled water – in particular where public waters supplies are close to collapse, and notably in developing countries.
  10. Nestlé's bottled water business is not simply a business like any other – it is a business with the sole natural resource essential for man's survival.
----------

Swiss global player Nestlé was fast to put up a spin on their website to obfuscate the video-taped blurb in which the former CEO and now Chairman of the group, which has a turnover of almost 100 billion USD, showed his true face. The spin-doctors tried unsuccessfully to shield "our chairman":
http://www.nestle.com/aboutus/ask-nestle/answers/nestle-chairman-peter-brabeck-letmathe-believes-water-is-a-human-right.
A classical case of Stockholm Syndrome: Fearful to loose their existence they "love" their chairman.

"4.5 million people are directly depending from us" Nestlé Chairman Peter Brabeck-Letmathe bragged, and the idea that this could be interpreted as a gigantic example of economic slavery doesn't even come to his mind, which obviously puts corporate profit above human rights. His goal to make nothing but profit from the most basic essentials of human life, food and water, is appalling.

Right now, almost 80 million people are living and dying in areas affected by armed conflict and natural disaster with no clean drinking water at all. More than 60 million of them are women and children. This is what Austrian Peter Brabeck, who is also a stout promoter of genetically engineered organisms as food, calls "that part of the population with no access to safe water, where one has to intervene more specifically". Yes, Nestlé sells their engineered and bottled drinking-H2O (one can not really call it water) in these areas to all warring armies and factions - four star generals of imperialist crusader armies with F-UK-US insignia, their vassals and bandwagon aid-contractors and likewise to the foreign funded fundamentalist fighters standing against them - but the people, from whom that "Nestlé-'water'" was robbed in the first place with shady deals, as well as the people in the crisis zones still get nothing - neither water nor compensation.

Unfortunately Nestlé is not the sole culprit, and many, even local "water-barons" follow their cruel model to sell what is a basic human right: HEALTHY NATURAL WATER.
Wherever the natural streams and aquifers run dry, you can be sure that the vultures of Nestlé, Vivendi, Coca-Cola, Pepsi et al. are not far.

And for sure these predator companies need to stay out or be thrown out of any indigenous people's lands, where the last pure sweet water of the world can be found.

WATCH - ENDGAME 1.5: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWh8b9wPe5U

The only true role-model of a country and state, where safe and clean drinking water for all human consumption as well as personal hygienic needs was totally free, Libya, has been completely destroyed by the F-UK-US and their allies. But the Libyan system - adhering to the basic human right to enough clean and safe water - was successful earlier and it needs to be revived in Libya and to be replicated as best practice the world over. Let the corrupted United Nations sleep, we, the people, have to do it by ourselves.
