Government admits widespread human rights violations
South Sudan’s Minster of Justice, Paulino Wanawilla Onago, has
admitted that widespread human rights violations have been committed
during the ongoing civil war.
Speaking to reporters at Juba airport upon his arrival from a meeting
organized by the UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva last week,
Wanawilla said government troops and opposition fighters have
committed atrocities in the country.
He further said rape victims prefer to report to international
organizations instead of the government, saying that no one can deny
that there are human rights violations in the country.
The government official pointed out that the government is able to
prosecute the perpetrators but the victims fear to report their cases
to the government.
