Compensate the released political detainees, gov’t told
Hellen Achayo | August 11, 2017 | 4:39 pm

Amnesty International has called on the government to compensate
political detainees who were released Thursday under the presidential
amnesty.

Some of the 31 men, who were detained without charge by the security
agencies, spent over 3 years at various detention facilities.

Amnesty International Regional Director for the Horn of Africa, Sarah
Jackson, says it is important that more information is given on those
who have been released.

She argues that providing them with reparations might help them
recover from the kind of detention:

“This is a positive step. But we are still seeking clarifications on
who exactly has been released,” Ms Jackson told Eye Radio on Friday.

Ms. Jackson also urged the government to release other detainees who
are still in custody.

“It’s important that those released should be provided with
reparation, that’s financial compensation,” she stressed.

At least 20 men have died in detention at three separate detention
centers in Juba between February 2014 and December 2016, according to
the human rights watchdog.
