Subject: Call for bursary applications for 18th Oxford Workshop on Teaching Evidence-Based Practice

Dear Colleagues,

The Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine will be holding its 18th Oxford Workshop on Teaching Evidence-Based Practice 3rd - 7th September 2012 at St. Hugh's College, Oxford OX2 8LE, UK.

We are inviting applications for bursary places to this workshop.

Applicants should send me an application form (which can be downloaded from www.cebm.net), together with a covering letter detailing their current involvement in Evidence-Based Practice and outlining what they would do with the knowledge gained on the workshop, together with a copy of their CV.

All bursary applications will be considered at the end of March 2012.

Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM)

Evidence-based medicine is the process of life-long, self-directed learning in which caring for patients leads to the search for, critical appraisal, and incorporation into practice of valid and clinically important information about diagnosis, prognosis, therapy, and other clinical and health-care issues.

Who should attend this Workshop?

This workshop is aimed at clinicians and other health care professionals, including those involved in mental health, who already have some knowledge of critical appraisal and experience in the practice of evidence-based health care and who want to explore issues around teaching evidence-based medicine.  The workshop is NOT intended to serve as an introduction to evidence-based medicine itself,.

You should consider attending if you:

·         are committed to patient-centred learning

·         believe in the process of small-group learning

·         take an active role in small group learning

·

Workshop Themes

There will be two main themes running throughout the workshop:

·         Teaching will be addressed through the exploration of different educational models for teaching evidence-based practice and identification and discussion of issues of pedagogy, curriculum design development and maintenance. The aim will be to promote the teaching of evidence-based health care at your home institution

·         Personal Development will be addressed by offering guidance and help in extending and advancing participants’ existing critical appraisal and teaching skills.

Workshop facilitators

Workshop facilitators have been practicing and teaching EBM at sites across the UK, Europe and North America and Australasia.

The Workshop will be Chaired by Dr. Carl Heneghan, Director, Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine.

Teaching staff will include:

Dr. Carl Heneghan

Professor Sharon Straus, co-author of How to Practice and Teach Evidence-Based Medicine

Professor Rod Jackson, Professor of Epidemiology and the Director of EPIQ from the University of Auckland

All good wishes,

Olive
