Why? Earth was used up, done for. Humanity's greed and wars and
failure to act as steward to their home utterly ruined it for the
purposes of human life. Maybe in another thousand years, it will be
fit for habitation again. Maybe.
Who? A shoddy remnant of a species that never quite managed to get
over the hump, leaving behind a smoldering toxic dump of a planet in
the hopes that the universe would provide another home for them to
ruin and burn. The others out there in the void hold a variety of
views on humanity. The majority are barely tolerant of the barely
sentient tool-using animals from the galactic backwoods. Some few
recognize themselves at a very young age, and at least one sees only
another source of food that made the mistake of leaving their gravity-
well.
What? This is what I don't know, based on the above. Humans in such a
situation would be a people living lives of quiet desperation, seeing
the end of their kind looming ad unable to do anything about it, as a
people, which is a little more grim darque in tone than I generally
like my space opera to be. I'm open to suggestions.
