Why actually Checkpoints in Test Scripts?

Checkpoints...GUI, Bitmap etc. Why actually a checkpoint is required in
Test Scripts. Why not the Test Script itself do the task or When a
script already exist why require a checkpoint.

In winrunner checklist following are the checkpoints:
1.Bitmap checkpoints.
2.GUI objects checkpoints.
3.Database checkpoints.
4.Text checkpoints.
