Help: Searching approaches for testdata management / organization

Hey there,

I search for different approaches and state of the art in testdata management and testdata organization for my thesis.

* Organize production data and generated data
* Files with meta-content

I want to develop a tool for searching files in a huge fileserver, not by name - by metadata (DICOM Information Objects) but I dont know the state of the art of testdata management for generic testdata with metainformation
