Hello guys,

I am in the market for a camcorder. I am debating between the three cameras below. Can anyone suggest which one should I purchase ? Any other suggestions?

I like the image on Pana cameras but I'd rather have a more robust
codec like the Canon or Sony.
Between the Canon and Sony 200, I'd go with the Sony.
The Sony PMW300 is just out, might be harder to get and is $8K at B&H.
For that money there are other options.
Why not look for a used Sony EX3? or EX1? Great cameras, easy to find
on ebay and a lot less money.

Higher data rate codec without an external recorder, fit broadcast specs for BBC as is.

Personally I'd look at the Black Magic Production camera when it becomes available.

Thanks, will take in account your input... The only thing that make me think twice about the XCAMS are the express cards, they are so expensive...

I've seen the SD card adapters used many times with the EX3 and EX1.
But I think the 300 with faster 50mb/sec is going to require SXS cards.
Still less than the Pana P2 cards!

BTW-There is a great series of comprehensive reviews of the new Sony
300 on Youtube. It has a side by side comparison of shots taken with
the EX3 and 300 and there is a marked improvement in the quality. I'm
impressed with the 200 and the 300.

Alex, I'd be very suspicious of any prices significantly lower than B&H.  You'll find a lot of places a few bucks cheaper but anyplace that's thousands cheaper is a scam.

The Canon XF305 has HDSDI output jacks.  The XF300 is the same camera without the HDSDI and will be $1k less than the xf305.  Either one has a great image for a 1/3" camcorder and meets broadcast bitrate specs.  It uses CF cards and workflow is a joy.  I used an XF305 for a long time and it was very reliable.  Only issue with the camera is the screen on the eyepiece is vulnerable to sun burn-in and you have to keep it covered outdoors.

I don't like Sony color but that's a personal taste issue. They're certainly the industry standard and you can't go wrong with them. Almost everything you see on reality tv is shot with EX3's.

Thank you, Chuck. I found that out about the XF305 and the XF300 yesterday. Your advice is well taken.
Cheers,

Alex
