ENDOSYMBIOTIC THEORY

--eukaryotic cells evolved from prokaryotic cells
--some believe that mitochondria and chloroplasts were dervied from prokaryotic cells taken up by a larger cell
--believed that eukaryotic cell took up these and by chance, the cells survived
--mitochondria originally aerobic heterotrophic bacteria
--chloroplasts oringially cynobacteria

5 PIECES OF EVIDENCE

1. both similar to bacteria in structure and size
2. both organelles bounded by double membrane (possibly one from vesicle, one from plasma membrane of prokaryotic cell)
3. both have genetic material and divide by splitting, their DNA is structurally like prokaryotes
4. have their own ribosomes
5. RNA base sequence of their ribosomes are like prokaryotes

(also possible that prokaryotic cell flagella became the spindle of centrioles)

O.O do we need to know all of this?
Or just what Mr. Smirk said during his review session?
Thanks!
Helena

- cellular respiration and photosynthesis -- just basics, what goes in and out (look at my study guide for cellular respiration, if you like)
-- diffusion, VERY briefly, though -- we talked about concentration gradient, I believe.
-- light and dark reactions

I left after that, someone else continue! :)
