Updated Android Problem

I updated by Galaxy s4 Mini to 4.4.2 and since then my longer texts get split into SMS only - previously they sent as MMS.

Is there an update that fixes this?

Also, I'd love a new feature where there was a button on the "desktop" that brought me straight to "new text" rather than having to go into messages, wait for loading, etc.
