Dear all,

I've been using Toolbox for many years, but I recently began to experience something for the first time.

When I have interlinear text files open (all with the extension .txt), one of the files often gets saved as "Temp of xxx.txt" even when I manually save it. Toolbox still shows the file as "xxx.txt", but when I close Toolbox, the file saved is not "xxx.txt" but "Temp of xxx.txt" and "Backup of xxx.txt". This always happens with the same one file, so there must be something wrong with the file, I guess. But I just can't seem to find anything wrong with it, even when I opened it in an editor and looked at it.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!!

Best,
Honoré Watanabe

We saw this problem another time, and it appeared that the person was putting a Unicode character (an accented i in his case) into the file name.

Toolbox is an old program, and it's old user-interface library apparently can't handle Unicode in file names. There are various reasons why this hasn't been repaired.

If this doesn't fix the problem, let us know.

Thank you. Unfortunately, the file name cannot be the source of the problem. (It's SLM_2002.txt)

Not sure if you saw Peter Austin's response, since it came with the weekly Digest title:

We saw this problem with training in Japan some years ago -- the name of the file is its full path name, not just SLM_2002.txt so if there is a non-ASCII character anywhere in the path (eg. in the name of a folder your Toolbox file or folder is inside) then Toolbox will have problems. It might be worth checking if you have named any folder using Japanese characters somewhere on your computer.

This reminds me that my initial thought with the other person was that the path name was possibly too long, so had him move it to closer to the root. That seemed to cure the problem when the file was named x.txt. But as soon as he gave it his regular name, the problem returned. So maybe he had such a character in one of the folders containing his project also, and I didn't realize it or think to check. Thanks Peter, for pointing this out.

So, Honoré, what is the full path for your file? (Is it the line starting with 2018 at the bottom of your message, which is full of Japanese characters?) Are the other files (which don't have the problem) in a different folder?

Let us know.

Hi.

I didn't see Peter's response, so thank you for this. (And thanks, Peter! It's you!)

However, this is not the case. First, I have more than 20 other interlinear files I work with in Toolbox, with similar files names (e.g. SLM_2000.txt, SLM_2001.txt, etc.) under the same folder as the one causing the issue. And second, the full path for the file is \honore\Dropbox\Documents\Sliammon\ToolboxProj_rev\ and does not contain non-Ascii characters. The only thing I noticed just now is that I use Dropbox and the file is fairly deep in the subfolders. Still, of all the similar files, the same one keeps giving me this problem.

Thank you.
Honoré

I'm not a Toolbox dev, but just based on seeing this problem occur in other SIL programs...

Very likely that it is Dropbox or some other program that is looking at the Toolbox file. What happens is that programs are trying to be extra safe in writing your files. Instead of just overwriting the old file, they first write the new version out (this "temp" version), then do a couple operations to replace the old with the new.

What goes wrong is that Dropbox wakes up and says "hey, there is a new file here, let's check it out", and in doing so, locks the writing program out of doing the next set of operations with it (e.g. renaming it). Antivirus programs can do that too.

I have been also using Dropbox for my Toolbox files, for quite a few
years. (I do that so I can share my Toolbox files among my different
computers.)  I have not had this issue with my Toolbox files.

Thank you, Johnhn and Wayne. What Johnhn was describing is something I was suspecting also. It's still very weird, however. Because I've been using Toolbox with Dropbox for many years, and I can't remember having this issue until a few months ago. And it occurs with just one particular file.

Like I say, I can't know that it is Dropbox; it could be antivirus. What I do know is that reports that other people don't have the problem, or you didn't used to have the problem are not strong evidence against timing-related conditions. These problems are influenced by the number of cores, the speed of the drive, the versions of various background processes, the size of the file, etc. A microsecond difference is all it would take for one process to grab a file before TB tries, or to be done with a file before TB tries.

The fact that it is just this file might give you a way to troubleshoot: maybe the size of the file maters? Could you try on a different computer? Does the problem happen if you work on it outside of Dropbox's folder, or with DB turned off? Etc.

Thank you, John. I agree about the timing. The issue doesn't occur every time I work on Toolbox, so it's hard to say when it occurs and therefore in what condition it occurs. However, I will try working in different environments and see if I notice anything. Thanks!

Hi, Everybody.

John, we appreciate the insight into the problem. We think we've come up with a solution which will avoid the conflict with Dropbox.

So, hang on for a day or two and we'll do our best to make it available as a test version.

Toolbox Test Version 1.6.3a which should solve the "Temp of" problem is available.
To see it go to the SIL Toolbox Downloads page and click on the link at the top
that says "The files listed below can also be found here." That will take you
to a page that shows downloads. The test version is included in that list.
The test version is a zip file that includes instructions about how to use it.

This test version solves the problem by not making a "Temp of" file.
It simply writes the output file directly. It also avoids making "Backup of"
which had potential of causing some similar problems.

Let us know if you have any problems with it.
